Description I wasn't sure which category to put this in photography or artisan crafts. So I placed it in photography.

Here is how I edit my images to get them ready for DA, I hope this is able to help some of you. ^_^ WARNING: this thing is pretty big.... This isn't a step by step tutorial but it has information about:

Levels
Auto Levels
and the Levels dropper

You're more than welcome. Photo quality really hurts the work of a lot of crafters. By brightening up the photo it makes it pop-out more and get more attention. I ee so many amazing works on DA get ignored because their photos are dull.

This is helpful, but... I don't understand why this is a daily deviation over.... you know.... art? Good tutorial though. Helpful.

The whole resources and stocks gallery has its own set of GMs, so featuring a tutorial is not taking the place of something else. Giving it a DD also helps it get exposure, so more artists can see it and improve their own work.

Besides, many of us consider tutorials to be art too, because you have to consider how the images and text work together, the flow, what makes it easier and more pleasant to read, etc. Making a good tutorial is very time consuming and requires a lot of artistic skills.

Finally, the artist herself (~chat-noir ) didn't request the DD, so I think that you should have addressed this question to the GM that featured it, ^shelldevil or the person that suggested it, =Romaji . You may also find this FAQ entry helpful: FAQ #873: What do I do when I disapprove of a Daily Deviation feature?

Softening the shadows would help as well given you have such a high contrast + brightness setting to the image. Doesn't look right with such high light and large dark shadows.

For whites and contrast, i usually just do a basic S-curve in curves. Whites up, darks down. Lazy, but you can get good at it.

Very nice. Brings the quality up enough so people know what they're looking at without promising more than the reality of the product.
By the way, these earings are amazingly made as well. ^^

I really like this, but could you do a tutorial for GIMP for us poor folk?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

stormlightloren In reply to Romaji [2011-05-07 03:05:35 +0000 UTC]

I think gimp has similar features such as levels and curves, you can try playing around with gimps features. I don't really remember though sorry, I only used gimp once or twice.

My sister uses photoshop much more than me, so I'll probably have to ask for her help. I've made some polymer clay earrings, and I couldn't get them to look nice in photos but this will help me out so much!

This is a really handy tutorial. I also photograph my items on a white background most of the time, though I set my camera's white balance and brightness to give me a white background from the off, but this is a great bit of post-processing if you can't set your camera up to maintain full colour on a pure white background.

chat-noir In reply to Mimi-Mushroom [2008-05-19 00:16:57 +0000 UTC]

That is a handy feature, I think a lot of cameras come with white balance now-a-days.

This is a great tutorial I have issues in my apartment with the lighting. none of the photos taken in my apartment turn out very well in terms of lighting. I'll try these techniques with my next artisan crafts photos and hopefully I'll get some good results.

Thank you!
