Description

This is the old foundation at the Ritz Carlton in Half Moon Bay. Here’s the new hotel, you can see the foundation on the cliff to the right.  Half Moon Bay itself is very small, with only about 10,000 people, but the hotel, and the hotel’s golf courses are world famous.  The pillars were torn down last year when a storm hit and knocked one over.  www.hmbreview.com/news/council…    Apparently, the oceanside foundation never had a building on it.  I think these pillars were from an aborted attempt at building a hotel in 1972, but the project folded and went through several owners until Ritz first began building on this site in 1999 and finished I think in 2003.

So, this is a fantasy picture from ages past, a memory of things vanished, just a floating string of electrical current, that, when snuffed out, another link is gone between man and time.  Here’s an imaginatively syrupy little documentary on half moon bay and their Portuguese parades.  archive.org/details/half_moon_…   Things have changed a lot since the 80’s.

I’m dog tired today, and Xander’s just getting warmed up.

Patrons:  would you like higher res files of the landscape pics?  I can do a patrons-only post with the image at 4000w (I suppose I could do the full 10000x but that's a huuuuge file even compressed) thoughts?

Our storms last year were crazy intense....if you're looking for someplace similar to this, there's a beach in Davenport right across from the old cement plant that has an abandoned wharf that's all collapsed, leaving only three pillars about thirty feet into the ocean abandoned but still standing. A really cool site, worth the drive...that whole area of the coast is awesome.

Half Moon Bay is home of the famous Maverick's surf spot as well.
This is a a nice landscape. Considering it eventually fell down, good thing they never put anything on it.

Yes indeed! I forgot about Maverick.  if the waves are big enough to be of international interest to surfers, it's probably not a good idea to build a hotel on the beach!

File this in the "what were they thinking?" box.  Funny how ruins, especially those of projects not completed, strike a cord in us as if to remind us one day we too will be gone.  Such happy thoughts aside, lovely work in clouds and sunlight.  It make me want to walk that beach.

I wonder if when the columns were originally cast whether they were over the beach like that, or right on the edge, or if there was a lot of erosion.  It happens with the california coastline, very dramatic shifts in short periods of time.  Thanks!

Gnoll-El In reply to chateaugrief [2018-03-23 17:24:00 +0000 UTC]

Most likely they were cast in place as part of the cliff side.

On Colorado Boulevard, between Glendale and Pasadena, there are similar columns that were cast partly as structure, partly as hillside re-enforcement for an apartment building project dug into a hillside that folded.  It looks creepy as heck, like Roman ruins found while excavating.  I suspect the neighbors living on top of the hill are not happy to be living on a now deteriorating cliff side.

Thanks!  I haven't used purple/blue in the cool range in a while I don't think.  It's always fun to do a wild color scheme that I haven't done before!
