Description

Did you know that you can find otters in California streams now?  They got driven out of the streams in the 1800’s due to I guess lack of food via pollution or just people being around (pretty shy), and they all went to sea, where they didn’t do too well, the sea otter population got down to just a handful of critters, one breeding pair?  The USGS keeps strict count of exactly how many sea otters are in California, or tries to, and have data going back to 1985, which is kind of cool www.usgs.gov/centers/werc/scie…   but now these 30 lb whiskery shellfish connoisseurs are making it back into the rivers and streams, particularly around the Bay Area where groups devoted to river otter spotting are springing up to track them  riverotterecology.org/otter-sp…   and see how they’re doing.  If you want to know what they look like, and how to tell the difference between a river otter and a muskrat and a beaver, here’s a nice set of photography to assist www.maxwaugh.com/2015/06/27/an…   River otters look a lot like dogs to me, I see the face and it’s got something of the pit bull look to it, broad flat head, wide set eyes.  Beavers and muskrats are rodents, but otters are weasels and they love eating fish and shellfish and crayfish, even frogs. So if you get a chance, keep an eye out for them!  Reminds me of Kenneth Grahame’s Wind In the Willows, a delightful children’s book if ever there was one.  My internet has been down for like three days so sorry for the short story, can’t do much research, and my post is late ‘cause I had to wait for the public library to open.

Xander’s library not pictured this week unfortunately.

For sure haha.  Hm, similar hunting styles at times, similar kinds of foods, the need to be streamlined and have a similar bite strength for aforementioned reasons…  That's just off the top of my head without getting all technical XD

Another beautiful work, a bit different with the sweeping vista and rainbow spectrum of color running thru the middle. I like that your landscapes are often accompanied by threatening weather on the horizon, at times it creates conflict in mood and others reminds of how fleeting the moment is.

In my town it's been decades coming and I'm old enough to have seen the Grand River go from an open sewer to being clean enough for recreation. Wild life has returned including game fish, pan fish, fowl, herons and while fishing the river I've even seen otter or mink along the bank. In the 19th/early 20th century a series of dams were constructed to produce hydro power for furniture industry. There is currently an effort to remove the dams and restore the rapids for which the city was named. As it turns out it is not as easy as simply removing the dams since much of the stone that made the rapids was remove to use as building material.

that's a wonderful story!  it's always great to hear about things getting cleaned up and the animals coming back in.  how it got polluted and bad in the first place should be a great warning to everyone, especially now that (at least in california) so much progress has been made that things are coming off the endangered list and onto the varmint list.  careful, thoughtful management of wildlife and wild lands.  and the thing is, the people who worked for it get to enjoy the fruits of their labor, beautiful rivers, forests.  now if we can just get the slovenly carpet installers and contractors to stop dumping trash in the canyons.
