Description
After seeing Eaglefeather and Moondrop passing through the trees towards the river. Ginai runs back through the woods, jumping over a log in excitement. She had found what Beau had been wanting to have ever since Silvana was born. A herd..just a mare and a stallion of course, but a herd nonetheless. Besides, more eyes meant more protection, and it was something she wanted as well. The eager seal bay tobiano mare jumps over another log and stops across a small meadow from Beau, her sides heaving. "Beau!" she calls to her, nearly out of breath as she trots over to the dun blanket appaloosa mare.
Beau pauses her grazing and raises her head, looking to the out of breath pregnant mare. "What is it Ginai?" she spoke bluntly, her ears flicking back a little in annoyance. It better not be another gelding incident like the last time..was all that went through her mind as she stared at the other mare. She had a foal to raise and she didn't want another false alarm. "I found a..eugh..a stallion. He's with a mare." she panted softly, her sides heaving gently. The running really seemed to have taken a bit out of her.
"Am I supposed to believe that?" she spoke bluntly, a stoic expression on her face.
Ginai flicked her ears back and spoke back softly, a little annoyed, "Uh yeah.. It's all you've been asking for since you gave birth, Beau."
"Last time you said you found a stallion it was a gelding." the bay dun blanket appaloosa bit back, snorting softly.
"So? It was still a male." Ginai answered and looked away, huffing softly. She was upset her friend was being so rude to her.
"I know he was a boy Ginai! The fact is that he was a gelding. A gelding is only half a stallion..and not the kind of man I want running a herd." Beau bit back at her sharply, narrowing her eyes a little as she glared at her.
"Augh, why can't you just be nice to me Beau? Even just a little? I found what you want, if you don't believe me then let me prove it." Ginai stomped a hoof on the ground in anger, snorting at her.
"Why you rude little thing, how dare you stomp at me?" Beau snapped back, her ears flicking back flat. Silvana looked between her mother and Ginai for a bit while they went back and forth at each other. She rolled her eyes and flicked an ear back, hearing a distant splash and a neigh of laughter. The young bay dun filly turned her head towards it in curiosity, both ears flicking forward.
"And another thing-!" she flicked an ear back at her yelling mother and snorted softly before she got up onto her hooves and quietly trotted away to the bushes. Silvana looked back towards the bickering mares. The two seemed too caught up in their heated fight to notice that she had moved away. She smiled a little and turned her head back forward, walking into the woods and down a hill towards the river. At the bottom of the hill she peeked out cautiously from behind a bush towards the horses by the river. There stood a stallion, up to his stomach in the lazy nearby river. He was a beautiful chestnut tovero splash sabino. And across from him on the bank Silvana was on was a black tobiano mare laughing softly as he had just splashed her with water.
"Eaglefeather be careful..hehe. You're going to make me lose my footing and I'll fall in." she giggled out softly, moving away from the edge a bit after drinking her water. The stallion smiled softly and chuckled gently before he started to move towards her. Silvana slowly started to come out and stepped on a stick, breaking it. Well there went her stealth approach. She froze on the spot, ears flicking back as she stared at the two horses in fear. She was afraid they were going to become angry with her. "Hello little one.. where's your dame?" Moondrop spoke softly, trying not to frighten the filly more. She was met with silence as the young bay dun filly took a timid step backwards.
"It's alright, we won't hurt you little one." The black tobiano mare spoke warmly as she started to approach the little one. Eaglefeather walked forward a little in the water as well, "Don't be shy, we're friends." His voice was smooth and warm as well. Silvana flicked her ears forward and started to calm down, about to take a step forward. But she stopped and froze as she heard a very familiar and angry neigh. Her ears flicked back and she backed up a bit as Beau burst out behind her and slid in front of Silvana, baring her teeth at Moondrop. "You stay away from my daughter!" she neighed out loudly in warning at the more timid mare.
The black tobiano mare backed up a bit at the sudden hostility, surprised and uneasy. "Uh Beau?" Ginai tried to get her friend's attention as she trotted up to stand beside her. The bay dun blanket appaloosa mare snorted and snapped at her, "Shut up Ginai!" The seal bay tobiano mare quieted after that and stood silently beside her, an ear flicked back in unease. "Listen ma'am this is a misunderstanding..I n-never meant any i-ill will towards your filly." Moondrop spoke softly and quickly, trying to calm the angered mother down.
"Psh..you approached my foal like you were going to take her from me..get your own foals, you look pretty enough for a stallion to want you. You greedy mare." Beau snapped and started to approach her, "But first I have to teach you a lesson." she charged at her but slid to a stop as Eaglefeather rushed out of the water between them, rearing up and neighing loudly at her. The sudden appearance of the stallion she hadn't noticed before caused her to nearly fall over in shock. "A stallion.." she looked back at Ginai, wide eyed. The seal bay smirked and flicked her tail. "Told you so." The stallion sighed softly before speaking, "Now if I may interrupt this. There is no need to fight.. Moondrop didn't know that this foal was yours. And neither did I.. we wouldn't steal the foal of another mare if it wasn't abandoned. We'd help it find it's way back to it's mother if that were the case."
"Now, might I ask. What was your daughter doing down here without you? What if I had been a hungry bear or a cougar? She would've been dead and you wouldn't have known until it was too late." he spoke with a stern expression on his face, looking down at the other mare. Beau stammered a bit before looking down, "I apologize.. I know..I was distracted." she glanced back at Ginai, her face and ears hot with embarrassment. The seal bay tobiano mare snorted softly and flicked her ears back a bit. "Don't look at me..you wouldn't listen." she snapped at her softly. Beau sighed softly and walked back to Silvana, nuzzling the little bay dun filly.
The chestnut tovero splash sabino stallion watched the mother and foal with gentle steel blue eyes. He hummed softly and looked over at Ginai, noticing her slowly swelling belly. "Would you three like to join us? We can offer protection for your foals..plus the more of us, the merrier." Moondrop spoke up, taking the words right out of his mouth. "Really? You'd accept us? Even after how I acted?" Beau spoke softly, flicking her ears back a little. Ginai smiled and walked forward to join Moondrop and Eaglefeather, looking back at Beau, "Well of course Beau. Why would she suggest it if she didn't already forgive you." The pregnant mare laughed softly at her bay dun blanket appaloosa friend.
"Alright..well. That's Ginai..and I'm Beau. And this is my daughter, Silvana." Beau introduced them all, walking towards them with Silvana shyly following behind her. "She's a beautiful filly Beau..and I'm sure she'll grow into a lovely mare." Eaglefeather smiled softly, lowering his head to sniff Silvana, taking in her scent. "Yes I'm sure she will be..but she's mute..so to be honest. I feel safer with more eyes if she tries to wander away again. Which she better not." Beau snapped the last part, glaring back at her daughter. The young filly snorted softly and looked away, pouting a bit. "Well we should find somewhere safer..so let's go." Eaglefeather sniffed the air and gently herded the mares.
Moondrop nodded and took the lead, leading them away from the river. "I've..never led a herd before..but I remember from my old herd of how to do it. My old leadmare was really smart and kind." the black tobiano spoke up, smiling back at the mares and Eaglefeather as she slowly led them away from the river, excited to be traveling with a herd again. Eaglefeather was happy to see that his tiny herd was slowly beginning to grow, it wouldn't just be him and Moondrop anymore.
