D E T A I L E D I N F O R M A T I O N
Personality: A well-mannered and friendly young man, Ian seems to have been blessed with the capacity to get along with most, or at least avoid stepping on people's toes. He has an amicable demeanor and preference to stay out of trouble, and when dealing with others, is diplomatic and approachable, always willing to get along and make friends. The young man, under normal conditions, can often be seen with a smile on his face and is generally up for having a good time and being a bit silly.
Ian tries to prioritize rational and calm thinking over acting on emotional impulse, which certainly assists in maintaining a level of tact and composure. However, being only human, he can't be on top of things all the time. He dislikes being caught off guard and tends to try to cover up any awkwardness with an air of nonchalance. Appearances are more important to him than he would admit or care to acknowledge, and when it comes to speaking his honest feelings, especially if they are negative, he sometimes prefers to keep them under wraps and maintain his cheerful, composed air.
When it comes to dangerous confrontations, self-perseverance is high on his list of priorities, and he may be quicker than others to break down in the face of danger. He prefers to avoid pain and discomfort. While he does genuinely care for others around him and wouldn’t abandon everyone at the first sight of a monster, he would certainly prefer to run or hide rather than fight in the face of peril. In relation to the work of the Agency, he is internally at odds with how much he wants and can achieve and how much he wants to remain within his comfort zone. For the time being he has decided it to be most reasonable to develop his abilities and take on cases at a slow and steady rate.
Positive traits: Level-headed, reasonable, cooperative, tactful, laid-back, amiable, practical, respectful, careful, friendly
Negative traits: Conformist, cowardly, selfish, cynical, unmotivated, cunning, uncreative, detached, materialistic, weak-willed
Ability in Use:
As telepathy usually implies, Ian is able to communicate via the mind, sharing his thoughts with others and likewise receiving theirs. The ability is useful for allowing secret communication between partners, or extracting information from suspects. However, doing so requires skill and concentration to be used effectively, and there are several nuances to the ability.
What Ian Can Get: Ian is only able to share thoughts at the "forefront" of the person's mind. This means he cannot read memory or knowledge not presently being thought by the person. Like words, thoughts can be misinterpreted, falsified, or silenced. If a person purposefully blanks out his mind or just happens to be thinking random stuff at the time, Ian won’t gain much there. Many times he may need to subtly influence the target to think what he wants him to. It is also possible for him to be blocked by supernatural means relating to the mind or telepathy.
At his present level, Ian has certain “modes” of use for this telepathy.
Communicating with 1 Person: Ian has become quite proficient in focusing his telepathy on a single person, and can effectively read a single person’s thoughts whilst blocking them from hearing his own, or vice versa.
Communicating with 2 People: Ian can telepathically link with up to two people, but has not yet gained the mastery of handling it. Such a scenario will involve all participants hearing every other person’s thoughts at all times, without any filters (like a telepathic conference call, and you can’t put yourself on mute).
Widespread Telepathy: On his journey to Specialist, Ian worked very hard and is now able to “broadcast” his own thoughts to everyone within a roughly 10 meter radius at will. He cannot listen to other people’s thoughts at this time. Everyone within the radius will hear his thoughts, friend or foe or random pedestrian alike.
Initiating Telepathy: Unless he is using widespread telepathy, Ian can only exchange thoughts with a person once he has made the conscious effort to establish a telepathic connection with that person. For this to happen, the person must be within about 10 meters and Ian must essentially stare at that person for a minute or so. If Ian has used his telepathy with someone several times, he is able to initiate and maintain the connection with greater ease. He can terminate the connection at will by clearing his mind, or the telepathy can stop involuntarily if Ian loses his focus.
Ian's ability has a certain range, duration of use, and number of people he can telepathically communicate with at once.
Range: 50 meters (1 or 2) /30 meters (widespread) | The farther the person is from Ian, the more shaky the telepathy (think of an unstable wi-fi connection).
Duration: 1-2 hours | After 1 hour of continuous use, Ian gets an increasingly worsening headache; after 2 hours, his limit is reached and he will go unconscious. After 1 hour of continuous use, he must rest for about 30 minutes before using his telepathy again without consequence.
# of Established Connections: 2 | As Specialist, Ian can use his telepathy with up to 2 people simultaneously. The only exception to this is his widespread telepathy ability.
It is possible for Ian to use his ability accidentally, especially nowadays with his widespread telepathy as he gets a handle on it. (OOC Note: As a rule, Ian never mind reads his fellow agents without consent. It is possible to happen by accident, but I will never have it happen unless you give me permission.)
Background: Ian grew up in the city with his little sister and affluent mother who had enough to provide for her children despite having separated from her husband when Ian was young. Despite some tension between his parents, the boy’s life was altogether comfortable. His mother was intelligent and caring, and raised and loved her children well. Despite their father being more distant, Ian and his sister also visited him occasionally. Ian excelled in academics and ended up pursuing a graduate education in the sciences. Everything was going smoothly at the time, nothing more to complain about than the average worries of everyday life. However, during his first semester of graduate education, a small mishap occurred in the lab. Upon checking the chemical storage room to retrieve some materials, it seemed one of the chemicals containers had not been secured properly, and Ian was quickly knocked out by the fumes permeating the room. Luckily, another member of his lab came by soon enough and called the emergency health personnel. Ian woke up a little bit later in the university’s clinic, a little light-headed, but otherwise alright.
Soon, someone came by to attend to him, and that was when things started to get weird. It started out as small confusion: thinking one person heard the other when nothing had actually been said. The worker tried to ask Ian how he was doing and such, but their conversation was occasionally disrupted by each other’s thoughts, although neither understood it as such. Still, the issue seemed to be somewhat sporadic and the transmitted thoughts of low intensity, so eventually they managed to say what needed to be said. Ian was free to go home, and both wrote off the incident as just… some weird lapse in attention or side effect of tiredness (or something, but basically ‘telepathy’ was not high on the list of plausible explanations). However, the problem persisted on and off for the next few weeks, up to the point that Ian found himself in some distress as he started to wonder if he now suffered from some neurological disorder that caused him to imagine other people’s voices in his head.
Eventually, and before he worked up the motivation to seek a health professional, he received a mysterious letter inviting him to an agency of people who dealt with the supernatural. Under normal circumstances, he would have thrown it out without a second thought, but he was just disturbed enough by recent events to take a closer look. Through some investigation, he discovered that the letter was in fact legitimate. Bewildered discussions with his family and serious deliberation followed, until he decided it was in his best interests to join this organization to learn more about his newfound ability, which was finally identified as telepathy. It is believed that upon being triggered, his ability had been in a temporary state of hyperactivity before settling down into the more controlled state that it is in now, much to Ian’s relief.
Ambition: Coming into the Agency, Ian strove to gain a greater understanding of his own ability, and of the supernatural world. These two things still hold true; however, after spending some time in the Agency, his feelings may have also become slightly more complex. Though dangerous, the work fulfills an innate need in him to serve the greater good and make the most of his potential. At the same time, given everything he's experienced, he finds the idea of retiring back to a more "normal" life more difficult than he thought, for better or worse.

Been a while (like... 3 to 4 years?) since I tried joining an RP club. This one seems really well-organized. I'm recycling Ian from Underground-Heroes since his story was easily translatable from there, and I'm still pretty fond of my old characters.
Updated 6/26/2016: Ian has ranked up to Specialist! Old Trainee app can be found here .
