Description Another 3D-to-2D product. I quite like this process and the end result. When it's all said and done, there's almost nothing 3D about it (which I like) and it yields some fairly nice results!

For the lulz, I uploaded the original render in all its blurry, chopped up glory: [link]

Even though there's not much 3-D about it, the clothes look like it.
For the clothes, I really like the overall design in it.

chesney In reply to Xaivizu [2009-01-03 09:17:53 +0000 UTC]

Well, thank you so much. I haven't seen anyone else yet take 3D renderings and turn them into 2D paintings yet, so perhaps I'm one of the pioneers of such a style. The clothing was quite a find. My renderings tend to come out a bit blurrier than I like, so some time is spent defining certain aspects a bit more before I begin painting. That dress design was one of those areas that needed some defining. Thank you

Xaivizu In reply to chesney [2009-01-03 09:21:02 +0000 UTC]

Actually, staring at the clothing again (avoiding the breasts...) it doesn't seem that blurry, and the defining is good.
Well, that's my opinion.

Oh, no, it's not blurry any more. I had to fix that. Compare it to the original render though, and you can see how blurry it was originally. I think there's a link to the original in the description.

I must add though... ... I keep briefly misreading the title as "Effin Diplomacy" !

chesney In reply to LovelyLocks [2008-12-11 19:42:38 +0000 UTC]

Well, normally I would call it "Elven Diplomacy" but the outfit she is wearing is called "Elfin" "Effin Diplomacy" does sound like something I would say, so it's probably easy to misread XD

I have a little suggestion as far as your coloring. Throw in some more variety of colors into your pictures. (X It'll help a lot. Also try to get a little more contrast in there, excluding the lines.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chesney In reply to JamieKinosian [2008-12-10 18:22:18 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, what do you mean by more variety? I'm definitely open to suggestions. :3 Please be as descriptive as possible for me ^-^

JamieKinosian In reply to chesney [2008-12-10 22:25:50 +0000 UTC]

Well, in this picture the shading and the highlights seem to be lighter and darker version of the same base color, but try adding some other hues like red, purple, blue or orange. Don't be scared to get a varied color pallet.

For example, here's a really good tutorial:
[link]

chesney In reply to JamieKinosian [2008-12-11 11:58:13 +0000 UTC]

Oh, okay! Yes, I have seen some tutorials that mention that before. I've tried it in the past, but unless I set it to a really low opacity, I can never get it to look right . I did try that on my last picture, but it's very subtle. Will you take a look at [link] and tell me if that's closer to what you mean? There are some softer blues on her left side (well, the viewer's right) but they may be too subtle to pick up on.

I'm also a bit worried that moving up the contrast and stuff wouldn't fit in with the dusky, night-time setting, and would throw off the over-all lighting of the piece. What do you think?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JamieKinosian In reply to chesney [2008-12-14 15:51:10 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's exactly what I mean. Don't be afraid to further that, and do more complicated things with it. You wont get better if you don't try, y'know? Just take into consideration what colors you would like your lighting, and what color the shadows are. You really really don't want to overuse just having lighter and darker shades of the same color. Like with this picture, if you used more blue she would have been more fitting with her environment.

The contrast isn't so much because of the subtle setting. It's really a matter of she's looking a little flat.

Haha I hope I'm making sense. (:
Sorry for the late replies. I just got over my college finals and doing a little bit of recovering.
