Description
Remember the episode “Hearts and Hooves Day”? The episode where the CMC single handedly created CheeriMac shipping? Well I was always interested in the history of the Love Poison, as it such a dark concept for MLP to have made in its earlier seasons.
So I decided to play around with it some, the story of the Love Poison is actually taken from the long hidden history of the Crystal Empire… and the origin of the Changelings.

The princess in that story was an alicorn named Aurora Anthea, who was given control over the Crystal Empire and fell madly in love with her gardener, a crystal pony named Emerald Isle, and created the first love poison to try and win his heart. Luna and Celestia were successful in breaking the spell, but by then Aurora was already pregnant and Emerald was traumatized. Aurora then gave birth to two baby girls- Princess Amore Agape and Princess Mania Pragma. Out of the two the people loved and adored the kind and generous Princess Amore, while they had.. lukewarm feelings to her strange and dull coated older sister Mania.

When Mania was told of the circumstances of her and her sister’s birth, she was angry, appalled, and hurt that her MOTHER would do such a thing. She lashed out and killed Aurora, fleeing the empire and the rage and heartbreak she felt turned her into Queen Chrysalis, the first true changeling. Amore stepped up and became Empress of the Crystal Empire, eventually having a family of her own- that line leads down to Cadence over many generations.

As for Chrysalis’s birth name- Mania Pragma- it comes from two of the Greek types of love.
Mania: Obsessive Love
Pragma: Enduring Love
so essentially Aurora named her first daughter “My obsessive love endures forever“
while her younger daughter, Amore Agape, means “My love goes beyond myself”

Extra Notes:
- Chrysalis knows Cadence is a descendant of her sister- how could she not when they look so similar- and has many complex emotions about it, as well as about the Crystal Empire as a whole. She refuses to go back there for any reason.
- Due to what happened with Emerald Isle and Mania Pragma/Chrysalis there is still huge stigma against darker coated ponies in the Crystal Empire- this stigma also added to what turned King Sombra evil later in their history.
- This particular bit of history is somewhat of a dirty secret in the Empire’s history, and it’s very hard to find concrete information on it without intense looking.
