All the more fitting when you consider Peter Pan was played by a red haired female actress in the original stage play due to child actor laws at the time.

J.M. Barrie originally wrote Peter Pan as a stageplay. Since the first time the play was performed in 1904, it's been a traditional to have the actor playing Peter Pan be female(occasionally a red head) this started a long tradition of Red haired actresses playing Pan from the first to latest production). This is also why Peter and Wendy don't kiss in the original play since they are both meant to be children, and both girls( Both cases were taboo at the time).
