Imagine a world where your child would never see your face.Imagine a world where as soon as your child is born, they have a gasmask put on their face to help them live.
Fun times huh?
I want to do a gasmask angel mini series of family portraits and poses. Hence my recent blog asking for family photos? I also asked this of people on my Facebook artists page... this is from the latter.
I wanted the gasmasks to be all the same to show some sort of family unity symbol and the father to have his wings clipped. He's a casualty of war.
Expect more Gasmask Angel Family Photos.

I really dig this concept.. i think it's utterly fascinating. I like this image the best so far. It's so... haunting. And creepy.
The dad's clipped wings were one of the first things I noticed and somehow it makes this even more tragic and heart-wrenching.

I think so too.. family portrait is so highly intimate and personal (even when they're the crappy bad ones) that to see this concept portrayed this way just drives the point so very close to heart. It's just really damned well-done

Before i read the Artist's Comments i thought that the father has cropped wings because he did something evil

I initially had the idea to make it a more evil thing to why the wings were clipped, but because the photo is a positive image, I kinda thought about what the people who gave me the reference would have wanted.

Very nice Shar... I like how you're perfecting your lineart style! The textures in this are great, it really looks like an old photo, but in a comic style. The fact that all masks are the same and that they're all looking straight to the camera makes it more creepy... It's like they're looking right at you, but you can't see their eyes... kinda disturbing...
Even though this is in a "simple" style, you still manage to add meaningful details, that's one thing I admire about your work. I specially LOVE the bow on the girl's gasmask... Such a disturbing combination, but in a wonderful way! I wonder if there's a special meaning behind the piece of tape missing on the bottom right?
Awesome job as always girl, will wait for more!
PS: I don't know if I have photos you can use, because I don't have my family photos here, but if I find something I'll tell you!

Actually there isn't any special meaning to the missing tape. It was just to try to make it look more old and weathered. Like it's fallen off or something.

This is so awesome, Shar!! I love this entire series, but each one seems to get better and more frightening...these really make you stop and think, and that's the mark of a true artist
I love the little details..the tape, the father's clipped wings, the unity in the gasmasks, the lifted bottom corner, the worn look of the photo...I think the worn look really adds to what kind of a world they're living in. I think this says a lot for family as well, that no matter what happens families will stick together and overcome whatever obstacles are thrown at them.
Truely wonderful and brilliant once again, Shar...you never fail to amaze me with your work

Oh my, I'm so glad you are able to see so much in this series. There are really so many stories which can be told about it and it's so much fun creating an image and putting together one or thinking of a story and illustrating it.
