Description Today was an important day. Alfred just couldn't screw this up. After taking a long shower to be sure he was clean, he searched his closet for his suit. He only wore this suit for extremely important occasions, like today. He dressed, then moved back to the bathroom to fix his messy hair. He checked the time as he walked out. 9:30 AM. At least he's on time. Swooping down the stairs, he grabbed the small, black box that held a proposal ring. It was a beautiful silver ring that had an inscription on it that read: I will love you forever. He slipped it into the pocket of the black suit and went to the car. He had to stop and get flowers, of course. The florist knew him there, and began to collect up the normal flowers Alfred always bought before he even walked into the store. "Wait, Jake, just red roses today,"
"Oh, is it a special occasion today?" Jake asked. Jake was skinny, almost like a rail. He had on brown hair pressed flatly against his head. His voice was always light and happy.
"Yeah, kinda," Alfred smiled a bit sadly.
"Hey, he'll be happy, don't worry about it. You always make the right choices!" He of course, knew of Alfred's relationship status.
"I know, its just--"
"Al, you got this," He placed a hand on Alfreds shoulder, then handed him the roses.
"How much?" Alfred began to take out his wallet, but Jake stopped him.
"Its on me. You're stressed and the least I can do is let you not worry about money."
"Thanks dude. You're the best," He smiled, and headed out of the shop with about a dozen roses in tow.
Alfred also had to make a stop at the chocolate shop. It was cheezy, but his boyfriend loved cheezy. Alfred grabbed a generally small box, paid and walked out. He was shaking, his nerves were getting the best of him. He drove to the edge of town, stepped out of the car and made his way to their special tree. They've met under this tree for almost 5 months now. "Hey Arthur... I guess todays the day I finally ask you this." No response. He knew he wouldn't be getting a response. Alfred knelt down and smiled nervously. "Its too late to be asking, and I know it was a mistake on my part. Sorry. But can you forgive me long enough, just so I can ask you..." He stopped. "I wanted to know if you would marry me," Tears began to bud out of his eyes and they rolled down his cheeks. He stared at the cold slab of stone that read: "Arthur Kirkland, born: April 1, 1988, died: March 23, 2011. You will be forever missed in the hearts of many." Alfred had not been strong enough to leave a small inscription for him. He couldn't.He didn't want to accept the fact that he was gone. "I-I brought you flowers and chocolates too..." He couldn't really see straight now, he was being blinded by tears. He placed the box open, facing his grave. "Hold on, they're in the car. I'll be right back, okay?" Alfred stumbled to get up, walked to the car, then came back with the roses and chocolates. "You always said red roses were really pretty," He smiled through his tears. "And I brought the chocolates because... Well they're kinda cheezy and I know how much you like that kind of stuff," He placed the chocolates to the right of the ring, and the roses to the left. Alfred couldn't hold it in anymore. He broke down. The tears were coming at a constant pace now, and they wern't stopping anytime soon. "I'm sorry Arthur. I should have been there for you... I should have never let you gone out to that bar, I should have never took my eye off of you. I'm sorry, it's all my fault. I'm not a hero, I know... I just. I wish I could fix everything," He cried. "I could have saved you... I could have..." He couldn't even dream of stopping now. All the anger towards himself, all of the sadness he had held in. The wind blew past Alfred, and it had sounded as someone had whispered,
"Don't blame yourself..." Alfred stopped for a moment.
"Arthur?" It was so stupid, of course it wasn't Arthur. He was dead.
"It wasn't your fault," The whisper came again. "And of course, I'd love to marry you," Alfred smiled. He may be crazy, hearing his dead boyfriend, but he didn't care. He sighed, and the tears began to slow.
"I love you Artie," But the wind never blew. Alfred didn't need it to. He knew Arthur loved him. He stood up, then walked back to the car and drove down the street, cheeks still puffy from the tears.
