A dragon mask I made with card-stock. I modeled it in 3ds max fit to a head model. I did all the measurements so it fits to my head perfectly. This was an experiment to see how capable I was of transferring a 3d model to the real world. I still need to attach the jaw to it, and find a way to rig the mouth to move with mine.Since it turned out so well I want to make it into a finished dragon head mask. Now I need some help here. Anyone have any ideas on how to make this more solid, resin and fibers perhaps? also I'm considering adding fur and or scales to it, anyone know how I could go about doing this? I'd really like to make this a complete finished product. Any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated, I'm new to all this.Β

Um, all i got when i downloaded the template was random numbers, letters, and symbols. I don't know. Am i just stupid and don't know how to read it? Or is my tablet just not up to date? Help, please!

It's a .pdo file. You need Pepakura to open it.
I'm actually surprised it let you open it in another program at all. Those random letters and symbols mean it was trying to interpret it as a text file.

BTW what type of paper is necessary for this?

I always use card stock for paper models. Any stiff, heavy paper you can print on should do the trick.

Hello!
I just wanted to say that I put the mask together myself. So far, poster board and glue seem to be doing fine. I have started a bit of paper mache' on the top, in places where I had trouble with joints so far. The eyes REALLY threw me off, I couldnt tell WHAT was going on there, so Im winging it.
Once I decided on how I want to skin it, will decide how I treat it. I thought about using plastic-dip. The spray on version. Also, decided to keep the lower jaw separate, and using a separate band to connect it to my head. that way, it moves with my jaw, if I put the lower jaw all the way up so that it touches my neck. Course, it gives it a bit of an overbite...but with teeth, that is not too much of a thing. Another way would be to add a plastic mesh base to the inside, something I have done with other masks and such, so that the mask has a sturdier base.

Yeah, the eyes were weird, I had to look at the 3d model to figure that part out, and still ended up modifying them a bit. It hard to tell how well detail on a 3d model translates to a paper model.
If I recall correctly with the jaw I didn't bother to work out the math so I actually made it so I could cut and custom fit the back of the jaw to my neck. Before throwing the mask away I used brass fasteners and rubber bands to make the jaw move with my mouth. Worked pretty well actually.Β
Once you get the mask done I'd love to see it. I'm actually really curious how you plan on making the horns smooth, or plan on replacing them completely. The horns are the one thing I had no idea how to make look good.
I've never even heard of a plastic dip or spray. So you just spay the thing and it coats it in a hard plastic shell? Sound awesome

So have you figured out the jointing process? I saw a video on youtube last year about how to form a mandible jaw so that it is pressured to your chin and allows it to move with your mouth, just a thought if I can find it again (which I need to now) I'll message it to you on here. Anyways. What all have you figured out? I am going to use this to make a costume for my son because he needs a frost dragon costume. Would using a very heavy weight (32lb probly) cardstock be a good option or is that what you used? Would spraying it with elmer's aerosol spray give it enough strength to be useable for 2-3 wears? Have you made more of these it's really lovely. Maybe a fox? wink wink wink! Anyway.. How the HELL do I open a PDO?!?!

I actually threw the model away a while ago. Had no use for it or reason to finish it. I think I used rubber bands and brass fasteners to hinge the jaw for fun before chucking it. Worked pretty well actually.
I've not made any other masks and really have no intention of making any more. Turns out its just not that fun for me.

Honestly with cardstock alone it should be durable enough for a few wears but you could test out spray on a piece of paper and see if it makes that any stronger.

if you opt that route... She makes a dough out of cheap toilet paper, joint compound (used in drywall) elmers glue, flour and linseed oil.

Thanks! Heh, sorry I don't have time for requests, I wish I had time to finish this mask. It's still sitting on my desk half made. Hope to finish by Halloween. You could try searching for one that's already made. I'm sure someone's done it before.

You could try something as simple as paper mache. Once the glued paper dries it would be nice and stiff. If you used card stock, it would problably hold up to the wet paper mache strips, and you wouldn't need that many layers. Then paint it up. Gromets that are male and female might work for the jaw. It would be easy enough to add fur and Or scales, but time consuming. You'll need patients. Paste them on in layers like shingles on a roof. Those would also hide what you use for the jaw joint. As for the jaw, I suggest no direct attachment. Just use make-up adhesive to glue it to your jaw.

Why do you say not to attach the jaw to it? I figured that would making it sooo much easier to use and add fur or what not.

You can seal it with resin or some strong sealant. But you're going to need a little support underneath it possibly with it just being paper.

Yeah. I have some mesh plaster stuff I can wrap it with to make it nice and stiff. I think that's what I'll go with. Hope it works well.

Just sent you the file, hope you got it, if not I added a link in the comments above. You may find that the head seems too big, but it's designed for your eyes to push right up to the eyes of it. Might need to find a way to mount it from the eyes. Mess around with it and find what works. Also the design's not perfect so a few of the numbers I've found don't match and there's a couple edges that are so close together anyway you don't need to cut and glue them, just leave'em alone. I'm sure you'll figure it out. If you add anything to it or make a finished mask I'd love to see the results.
