Misconceptions about "White Knights" and "Friend Bias"
Disclaimer: I know that "white knights" and "friend bias" both exist (no shit); my point in this journal is that people are throwing around these terms much too easily nowadays without actually thinking about what they mean (dejavu to Sues, neh?).
"White Knights"
Defending a friend does not automatically label someone a "white knight."
A "white knight" in today's internet lingo is someone who rushes blindly to the aid of another person either in the hopes of getting something in return or because that person is a friend/family (mostly the latter). This is usually done by the "white knight" without taking into consideration the errors of the person they're aiding or not taking in the point-of-view of the other side. In other words, they could be rushing to the aid of an art thief that knows what they're doing is wrong, yet the "white knight" will still say that the thief is in the right simply because that person is their friend.
If one of my friends gets attacked wrongly and I support them or "rush to their aid," that is NOT me being a "white knight" by the aforementioned definition. If I point out to the attackers the flaws in their accusations and/or arguments and I'm making logical fucking sense, I am not being a "white knight."
I don't know how people suddenly decided to switch around the definition to encompass those who actually react logically to conflicts between their friend(s) and others, but it annoys the butts outta me to see it. It's as if people are making defending our friends into something evil, like wow, seriously?
But "your friend doesn't need you to defend them!1! They can defend themselves!!1!" (aka: I'm losing the argument, TIME TO RESORT TO CALLING YOU OVERPROTECTIVE / A WHITE KNIGHT).
Yah, so what? Maybe our friends can defend themselves (depends on the situation, actually), but that doesn't mean we can't back them up or help them. For instance, if your friend falls to the ground and can still get up on their own, does that mean you won't offer them a hand to help them up? If your friend gets called a nasty name during class or is accused of something wrongly by the teacher, does that mean you won't speak up to defend them? These are the reasons why I can't take this argument seriously.
tl;dr - There is nothing wrong with defending a friend (or ANYONE for that matter) who is being wronged. If someone calls you a "white knight" for this, they're a nub who can't come up with a better argument/comeback to throw at you lmao like really.
"Friend Bias"
Just because a critic/reviewer is critiquing/reviewing a friend does not automatically mean their critique/review is biased.
"Friend bias" is when someone goes easy on a friend because that person is their friend, and they don't want to hurt their feelings or be "mean" to them. For instance, a person finds a flaw in their friend's character or artwork, but when asked about what they think about that character or artwork, that person neglects to correct them or tell them about the flaw because it's their friend they're giving a response to.
I have reviewed a shit ton of characters, and a good majority of them were done by friends. If I had any "friend bias" towards the reviews I gave, I wouldn't be reviewing in the first place, and I wouldn't be an honest friend.
Why people suddenly believe that you can't review/critique a character simply because that character's creator is a friend annoys me about nearly as much as the "white knight" misconceptions. Apparently, states the opinion that was so gracefully bestowed upon me, it's not logical for someone to like their friend's character for any other reason than that character being their friend's. Sorry gais, we can't like a friend's character by our own true opinions on what makes sense and what doesn't.
This also relates back to the "white knight" thing. If you attack my friends character and you're being unreasonable or making false accusations, you better fucking prepare yourself cuz I'm sending a torpedo of walltext logic up your sorry ass.
The days where internet logic urks me lmao. Welcome to the Tumblr character review world and dArama 101.

asfjdj okay
For white knights, I don't know about y'all but (despite my username) I'd find some random person I don't know springing to my aid uber creepy. Like "I don--who--wha---WHAT ARE YOU DOING"
People just get all butthurt when their trolling is put to a stop that they start flinging big words they don't understand around in an attempt to scare away their competition. In reality, it just gives us things to laugh about in Chi!rants |D
Can't wait for dat Mary Sue rant xD these are always fun

Yah that's the most common xD
Because I defend one of my friends and no one seems able to have logical, civil debate with me without getting angry or offended /shot.

*sigh* but logical civil debates are the most fun ones ;;
LOL you know what i want to see this. i want to see you structure an entire argument based solely on kitty gifs. ohgod i need to see this. please. make this happen. ohgod.

IKRRR
It's really tiring since most people these days immediately think you must hate them or that they have to "win" the argument if you disagree with them. Like, uh, no, you're not that impacting on my daily life to care that much /shot.
OH GOSH
That would be so much fun xD If only I could edit in words onto kitty gifs LMAO; it'd be tricky to find the right ones otherwise xD

haha in that case i've lost plentyyyy of arguments. i jest, but really, it's like people can't have a proper conversation these days. they can't accept ideas that aren't their own because they're afraid it will make them look lame.Β
but kitties have fabulous body language, i'm sure their swaggy rear-ends could constitute an argument of their own ;o; somehow. ANYWAY, IT MUST BE DONE.

EXACTLYYY
Seriously some convos are really just a difference of opinion, either side makes sense from a logical point of view. And yEEEET people still get their titties in a twist like gais is it so hard to discuss something without snapping at the other person ughh
YES THEY DOOOO
IT MUST HNNN

enorie In reply to ChikitaWolf [2014-05-11 22:39:11 +0000 UTC]
mm hmm. usually if there's a really provocative (controversial) journal i'll take the devil's side and try to put everything on the table, not just the side i actually might agree with. if that makes sense. i also do it with journals where literally everybody seems to take one side and i can see the argument for the other side. i'm kind of a buzzkill LOL.
what bothers me most is when the difference of opinion and the fact that everybody gets their titties in a bunch is because... they are terrible fucking writers. seriously, i can't count how many journals i've come across where i literally could not decipher the argument being made because they were seriously shitty writers.

Oh gosh, that's always fun xD I used to really enjoy finding myself up against a good devil's advocate while I was stamping LOL.
I don't think that's buzzkill at all, I think that's great 8DD Plus, seeing both sides of an issue is smart anyway, seeing as how things can be missed that could really turn the tide of the argument going on.
AHHH YES THAT IS SO TRUE
Gosh I hate running into those xDD

May I add to the defiinition of white knight a male who treats women as goddesses only in the hopes of getting sexual favours for them. .3. Also appliable to people who treat artists like gods and will jump blindly in their defense when there is no need for it just to get them to draw for free.
The last gif is killing me omg

ChikitaWolf In reply to TheStrayLiger [2014-05-11 20:02:31 +0000 UTC]
Oh gosh yah, I found that definition a few times too; should def add it in.
THAT ONE ABOUT THE ARTISTS
HAPPENS SO MUCH AMG
I watch a lot of popular artists and when they make a call-out journal (with the username included) I always cringe because I know the person they called out is gonna get attacked by people who don't even know what the fuck happened jfc. It's really pathetic :'D
I KNOWWWW 8DD It's my favorite gif that Reisy found for me so far xDD (She finds a good majority of my kitty gifs LOL)

TheStrayLiger In reply to ChikitaWolf [2014-05-11 20:07:42 +0000 UTC]
Hnn IKR. It angers me a lot not only for the people who get attacked but also because all those white knights are probably going to take for granted that the artist is gonna draw for them and UGH PEOPLE.
*touches all over the gifs* I need to go gif hunting for kitties one of these days too

YES IT'S SO IRRITATING
I really hate the pandering and ass-kissing for art it's just so rude; but I think the guilt-tripping is even worse like what the actual fuck no they don't owe you shit I don't care if you did this and that for them xD
Oh gosh it's so much fun
I could spend hours doing it
Tumblr is pretty good with having lots and lots of kitty gifs, though sizing can sometimes be an issue xD
