Description The clan leader saw them and strode confidently in their direction.

Flyspur looked down, his soul spots flushing deeply and he tried to keep his tail from switching in agitation.  His lower hands fidgeted uncontrollably.

He could feel Rover's knowing grin.  The human elbowed him in the side.  "She is mighty purdy, ain't she?"  He whispered.  Which just made Flyspur want to curl into a ball and hide.  She was gorgeous.  But he barely let himself think that.  Someone of her station wouldn't talk to a Third, he was sure of it.  And if she did it would be only out of forced politeness.

Her tail swished gracefully as she walked.  Unlike any other Jssfloon he had met it was hairless except the tip, which was a mass of tiny braids.  She stopped before them and spoke with Rover for a moment, what had been said was beyond him he was so flustered...And then:

"And who might you be, brother?"

Flyspur dared to look up and found that she was talking to him.  His mouth opened but nothing came out.  Rover stepped on his foot and with a squeak of surprise he finally answered:  "Flyspur."  He looked at his feet, waiting for her to briefly acknoledge him and turn away.  Suddenly her hand was under his chin, lifting his head until he was looking straight into her face.  Her green eye twinkled with gentle humor

"Flyspur..."  She said in a high melodious voice.  " 'The sound of water'.  Such an old-fashioned name."
----

Her name is Kya.  What do you think of her?

She is actually from a plot bunny that has been in my head for a very long time.

(The Jssfloon belong to me)

So I've been wondering how to pronounce Flyspur's name.

Since you mentioned the Jssfloon like soft sounds in language, I've been pronouncing it so it rhymes with "whisper."  That way it actually does sound kind of like water.

Yes. It rhymes with whisper.

Interesting scene! I didn't know Jssfloon's look down on 3rd born children of their species? It looks like Flyspur might like her but is just too shy.

Interesting... does her tribe shave their tails?

I've also kept noticing the theme of the "Thirds" being sort of looked down upon... I guess it shows how even an idyllic culture like the Jssfloons' has its prejudices. (Is there a visual way to tell if one is a third child, by the way? I'm afraid I've forgotten. I just wondered since Flyspur was thinking she wouldn't talk to him on sight.)

Anyways, pretty picture as always! You're doing quite well with backgrounds lately!

Good question.  Not saying yet.

They don't look different.  But most Jssfloon have a scent gland under their jaw that produces an identifying smell.  Thirds don't have that, which is actually the main reason people are uncomfortable around them.

Thank you!

You're welcome!

Have you ever made up a female Third character before? Just curious. I'm an only child, but sometimes I've felt like I'd identify with your Jssfloon Thirds since I've never been interested in finding a romantic relationship (and I'm guessing most Thirds wouldn't be in that sort of relationship either, correct me if I'm wrong). During my teens I always felt like most people wouldn't really understand me, because of that difference I had from most other people's lives and goals. But at least I don't have some sort of outward sign like their absent scent gland that would make people uncomfortable just to be near me. That must be rough.

chill13 In reply to FeatherQuilt1988 [2015-10-11 04:04:31 +0000 UTC]

Don't feel bad. That's not something I'm particularly interested in either..or ever have been for that matter.

Thirds actually can get married and have a romantic relationship. But there are so few of them in the first place and many of them are kind of expected to live at home and be caretakers like Flyspur, AND it's pretty much only socially acceptable for them to marry another Third....their options and opportunities are pretty limited.

FeatherQuilt1988 In reply to chill13 [2015-10-17 15:24:11 +0000 UTC]

Aww, thanks for saying so. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

I can see how that might be the case. Out of curiosity, what do you mean by "caretakers?" Do they adopt children often, like Soorn did (though of course Rover was an off-world orphan instead of a Jssfloon one), or do you just mean they take care of other people's houses?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to FeatherQuilt1988 [2015-10-17 20:53:49 +0000 UTC]

Caretaker is just a glorified nanny/housemaid. In a normal Jssfloon household there are the grandparents, either one or two couples of their children and he grand children. Once the younger couple/couples have children the grandparents stop working and stay home to care for them while the couples work to support them and their children. Once the grand parents reach their last metamorphosis one of the offspring will stop working to stay home and care for them. In a household with a Third all of the home duties--housework, looking sfter children, looking after older parents---fall on him or her. It's a way of earning their keep, considering most Thirds can't find other work.

If Thirds do marry they almost always adopt. It gives them more job oppertunities since they now have a child to support.

FeatherQuilt1988 In reply to chill13 [2015-10-23 14:32:46 +0000 UTC]

Aww, so the grandparents take care of the kids? That reminds me of how I was raised. I live with my mother and grandmother, and when I had to drop out of public school (because of the health reasons we talked about in another comment) in fourth grade, my grandmother retired to stay home and look after me while Mama worked.

I really love how family-centered your Jssfloons' culture is, even though I do feel a little sorry for the Thirds.

Last metamorphosis? Was this in one of your infographs for them? I didn't remember about it, only the first (getting the second set of arms). What happens in the last metamorphosis? (Sorry if I'm always pestering ya with these questions, but I really like learning about your aliens! They're so creative! )

Aw!  That was so nice of her!

They really are close-knit when it comes to blood.

No.  It wasn't, actually.  The last metamorphasis marks the Jssfloon 'Elder'.  There is no other life change after it.  Physical changes include, again, the lengthening of the lower arms.  At this stage they become as long as the upper ones.  The facial hair ridge grows clear down the middle of the nose to the upper lip and from the chin down the neck and often the sideburns will meet the goatee so the face is competely surrounded and bisected by hair.

It's about the equivalent of a human sixies or seventies...It's when old age begins to set in.

FeatherQuilt1988 In reply to chill13 [2015-11-17 01:39:33 +0000 UTC]

She's really special.

It sounds like it! And it sounds like they also are just as strongly bonded with adoptive members too (like in your "Brothers" comic story), and that's wonderful too.

Hmm, I wonder why their arms wait so long to reach the full length? Maybe it helps them balance more in more unsteady old age?

Interesting as always!

LOL!  Similar situation...different girl.  Flyspur was probably in his early teens in that other picture.  But neither Rover nor Flyspur have changed much since then.  Flyspur's still deathly tongue-tied around females of his own species and Rover is forever pushing him to open up.

Oh...yes.  He does.

ChrystalK In reply to chill13 [2015-09-25 20:36:09 +0000 UTC]

I thought so, judging by the fact that the middle of his hairline is just beginning to creep down his nose in that other picture. Typical Flyspur behaviour, then. Not so good at talking. But it balances out since Rover talks enough for the both of them.

Haha. He looks like his four-lobed brain has millions of answers to her statement swarming around in it. He'll probably just end up saying something like, "Ummm..."

Kya almost has an African American or Indian look to her.... Very exotic and pretty.

Seems you are well-versed in Jssfloon growth.    *gold star*
Yeah, he's pretty shy in general.  But girls, ESPECIALLY, Jssfloon girls send him screaming in the other direction.

LOL!  Yeah.  He's a smart guy and usually an elloquent speaker when he chooses to open his mouth.  But not around girls.

I thought that too when she was finished.  It wasn't intentional.  But she certainly is a lot darker than most Jssfloon so far and those braids kind of give her an exotic flair.  So glad you think so.

ChrystalK In reply to chill13 [2015-09-29 01:22:28 +0000 UTC]

Flyspur freaking out over something as simple as a girl? That seems weird to me. Was he like that around Kit or Nana at first? Or is it just around girls his own age and species?

He probably just isn't comfortable being noticed at all, especially by a girl.

I love how both of their soul spots are showing. Her braids are pretty cool looking...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to ChrystalK [2015-09-29 02:04:52 +0000 UTC]

Yep. Nana is old and Kit is married so neither of them bother him. He can handle himself around most alien girls, since he knows they aren't bothered by his Third-ness, but they still make him a little nervous. But Jssfloon girls get him stuttering.

Nope. He doesn't know what to do when someone pays him a lot of attention.

Thanks!

ChrystalK In reply to chill13 [2015-10-02 21:49:38 +0000 UTC]

So, no problem with the old and/or married. Well, that narrows it down for him, I guess...

Neither do I. But I'm the first child and I've had people paying attention to me all my life. It's nothing new for people to pay attention to me, but I just naturally have no idea what to do...

No problem.

chill13 In reply to ChrystalK [2015-10-03 16:22:07 +0000 UTC]

Well, and Nana and Kit are his friends. He knows them well and because of that he is at ease around them.

Heh.. I'm an only child and am kind of used to being the center of attention....and I admit I'm a bit of a ham.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChrystalK In reply to chill13 [2015-10-03 17:53:50 +0000 UTC]

I can see that. Nana seems like a grandmother to him and Kit seems to act like...a sister or maybe an aunt.

You have some Rover-ish tendancies, huh? Haha! I don't. I tend to slink back into the corner of a room and hope no one notices me. But when people complement me, I'm so clueless as to what to do that I come off as awkward.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to ChrystalK [2015-10-03 20:34:42 +0000 UTC]

Heh....actually there is a lot about Rover that is based on me, although on him much of it is exaggerated. I get really excited and obsessed about things, I love to meet new people and get really animated when I tell stories. I also like to try strange food...although very much unlike rover I can't stand spicy food.

I think it's just best to smile and say thank you.

ChrystalK In reply to chill13 [2015-10-04 19:44:14 +0000 UTC]

Interesting. Most people's main characters are a reflection of the author, but it still surprises me whenever I find out that someone has some similarity with their character. You don't like spicy food, huh? I don't like very spicy stuff either. And yet...I'm hispanic...

That's usually what I do, but I end up barely smiling and using a hesitant tone...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to ChrystalK [2015-10-05 00:05:32 +0000 UTC]

Of course there's quite a few things we don't agree on, as well.  Rover does lie for his convenience on occasion and I think even white lies are dishonest.  And while I do like an occasional comedy western I am not as enamored with them as Rover.

No.  I'm wussy when it comes to spicy things.
LOL!  I know a lot of hispanic people and most of them really like their spicy.

chill13 In reply to ChrystalK [2016-02-14 03:49:24 +0000 UTC]

Some.  I am not shy.  I tend to be very polite and always try to think of how whatever I do will affect people.  I don't always succeed by any means but it's something I strive for.  I like logic puzzles and bright colors.

But Flyspur is more based on my BFF than me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChrystalK In reply to chill13 [2016-02-14 14:32:47 +0000 UTC]

I have a feeling that Flyspur is almost the exact opposite of me...  Although I do like puzzles and riddles. But I tend to be more drawn to deep, cool colors, like blues, blacks, greys, greens, and purples. I hate wearing yellow, which seems to be the color that Flyspur wears the most.

I tend to speak my mind, no matter how it may effect others which makes people think I'm rude, but I really don't know how things will sound to others until I've already said them.

The level of introverted/extroverted qualities really depends on who I'm with. Super extroverted people, I tend to act shy around until I know how they react to others being as outgoing as they are.

But with shy people like my best friend, I'm completley outgoing. I'll act crazy and reckless, cracking so many jokes in a row that she laughs so hard she can barely breathe, just for the sake of drawing her out of her shell. I can't stand to see her looking uncomfortable in a situation and acting like a comedian makes her relax. XD

I unintentionally ended up making my main character, Gadget, reflect me a lot while making Rojan more like my best friend. XD

Ha ha! That's so funny. I really had never intended to 'base' anyone on people in real life. It was actually my best friend who pointed it out to me. And once I actually started looking at it I was like 'whoa! That's totally us!'

Yeah it depends on who I'm around too. But mostly extroverted.

ChrystalK In reply to chill13 [2016-02-14 19:59:02 +0000 UTC]

XD Same here, but I guess it was inevitable that at least one character acts like a good friend or close relative.

Ha! My best friend was the one that pointed it out to me, too! She kept calling me Gadget...and I kept responding! It took me a while to realize that she'd been calling me by my character's name.

Eventually, I jokingly said, "You're the Rojan of my life..."

Now it's become a running joke that we called each other by the name of the character that we resembled most personality-wise... XD

Yeah. I tend to lean more toward extroverted, too. ;D
