Description VANITAS

I did it for practice.
I wanted her to look like between 20 and 30.

My intention was to show no one is safe from the death, even the young folk isn't.
We got to accept that - this is how it goes.

I'm not the best digital artist by far, but still I hope you like it.
Improvement prosposals are VERY welcome.

The quote: "Mors Certa, Hora Incerta."
means: "Decease is certain, it's just a matter of when."

(Critique)
Pros:
*Alright, i would say this picture is atleast 10x better than your first one. very well done on the coloring and shading.
*Alot of deep shadings for those parts like under the breast and under the arms upon her body.
*Face compositions is wayyyy better this time so it was rather a little bit more appealing (so good job on that)
*I'll assume you drew this on paper first? ^_^
Overall this is definitely an improvement.
Now if i were to do a rating? 3/10 for your first picture. 7-8/10 for this second picture
Keep it up.

Cons:
*you need to tell me what program you're using? is it MS paint? if it is then you must at least get Photoshop or Paint tool sai some how. those programs will make your drawings 100X better.
* [Just my opinion] i do think the arms are stubby again(whether it's your intention) General anatomy of the arms is that the elbows are aligned with the belly button then forearms end at the hips then the wrist and hands are a couple of inches below the pelvis.
*I'm assuming that's (death) behind her. two things i want to point out is the hands are rather small but i dont think it's a big problem, however, i cannot make out the face of the skeleton. IF you know what i mean? "i had a friend of mine look at this picture and he said death looked like it had a clown face sorta." so yea XD?

Advice: yea.... this video should be quite helpful. (found it online) [link]
Once you get a tablet i guess, results would be different. Paint tool sai and photoshop has these tools in the toolbox called (line tool) very helpful because you can set points and the line smoothly curves into the set points so your picture doesnt look rough on the lineart.
so i think once you've managed to either get a tablet or one of these programs , you're pictures would turn out much much much more smoother and curvy.

Hope this helped. c:

Thank you very much for the critique.
Yeah ^^ I drew it on paper first and scanned it in. It was way easier to draw this on PC - so thank you for the tip
I use the GNU Image Manipulation Program - also known as GIMP ( 2 )

Hehe, yap, the arms are to short I know, but I noticed that much to late ( after I did the shading on them )...
Next time it will be better - I promise

It's a pitty I had to shade the death this way... there was so much detail in his face, but it didn't look like he and the girl go together.
So I had to "erase" the detail and replace it with shading. I wold like to prove this, but I don't want to upload a WIP - image following the finished one...

Thank you so much for your help
I hope so. It's hard to draw clear contours with the mouse ^^

May I ask you one question?
What did you draw for practicing digital art when you just started?

The other times i just watched animes and looked up anatomy of a human and just began learning how to draw better. for example, If someone is crouching then i have to remember where the skin creases and folds or if someone is jumping then i have to remember where the skin stretches and
draw the areas where it stretches.

Kinda basically it..

Animes just gave me the idea of digital drawing as well ^^
You're right ... would be better when I just start studying the human body...

But I got to say: compared to yours mine is just clutter.
I mean, I can't even get the proportions straight...

Could you please tell me how much painttool sai costs? I can't find any prices on the internet...

lucky for me i got a copy from my friend, but last time i checked..... i randomly searched on the web for the price and i saw 60$ but i think that's unreasonable..... i think you can get some sort of discount on some other web.

Hehe ^^
Is your version cracked? Or is it an original version?
Hm... A friend of mine is pretty good at computers, electronic, software and stuff like that... I think he can crack this programm, although I really want to support the makers of Painttool sai, but 60bugs are a lot for a student like me ^^

Jay87k In reply to Chimaera94 [2012-08-20 18:45:49 +0000 UTC]

yea lol umm no it's not cracked... one of his parent works for some art studio and he gets free programs and gear... which was nice .

Lucky you...
btw: the next picture is now in the works, I'm pretty satisfied up to now
I think the proportions will work this time ...
Let's see how this will turn out ...

Do you still have requests to work on?

Jay87k In reply to Chimaera94 [2012-08-21 00:01:06 +0000 UTC]

a little but now alot.. im trying to get into doing more commissions because i kinda do want some benefits when i draw.. like points or whatever? if you know what i mean...

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Chimaera94 In reply to Jay87k [2012-08-21 00:46:01 +0000 UTC]

I know what you mean.
The premium account is relatively expensive, but I think you deserve one. Your doing great work. And your prices are extremely low. You could demand much more points...

Btw: Sorry for brownnosing ...

And I know you're having a lot of work for other people, so it isn't hard to understand you want to get "payed" for this effort.

What are you doing next?
How long does one of your paintings take on an average?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jay87k In reply to Chimaera94 [2012-08-21 04:27:09 +0000 UTC]

Lol is it that low? how much should i charge it up to lol....
For full body/half/neck/chibi.

And yea i do think my prices are low but sucks.... no one wants to do commission just requests and probably only way i ever get any benefits is if i enter contest or whatever
and even so i might still not win anything due to others.

Ummmm i put a list of requests and commissions in this journal now.. So i can keep track..[link]

Uhhhhhh my paintings... i havent really kept track but i think it takes me atleast 3-7 hours depending on the complexity or if i just get lazy lolololol.

Chimaera94 In reply to Jay87k [2012-08-21 14:35:17 +0000 UTC]

You could at least double the prices... the pictures are defenitely worth it.
But idk if anyone would still buy them, people are very stingy these days...
What contests have you already entered?

I need a while to finish a drawing ... I'm easy to distract from my work ^^...
Did it take much more time when you just started digital drawing?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jay87k In reply to Chimaera94 [2012-08-21 14:59:27 +0000 UTC]

Lol.. once i start a drawing or painting i usually try to finish it from the moment i begin. as well as the time generally is about the same because i didnt know what i was doing when i was shading and stuff so it took about 5-10 hours but since im well adapted to it now i can perform better results and more things in the same amount of time from when i first started. so in a way i've replaced confusion to detailed work in the same 5-10 hours of work.

and yea i guess i could double... idk... lol

So do I when I make pencil drawings. But most of them take more than 10 hours. Once I take a break during this time I lose the stomach for the drawing. And it's hard to get back in.
It's different with digital art, don't know why, but it is ^^
I love digital art for its easy way to shade something. I mean: once you make a mistake you can easily erase it. It's defenitely not the same with ball - point pen and even pencil drawings. It's hard or almost impossible to remove the mistake.
I can never fully concentrate on a drawing, 'cause my friends are with me on teamspeak. Every time I turn my computer on, they're online and they always want me to come on their TS channel...
I hope I can get drawings done in this short time one day. ^^
But I still need much more practice.

Which one of your paintings took the most effort and time?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jay87k In reply to Chimaera94 [2012-08-22 16:21:33 +0000 UTC]

hmm yea.. honest im not all that sure which one of them took the longest.. i just generally think they all take around atleast 4-8 hrs and the effort part... well it's all creativity. As i color more and more i start to realize there are some different ways to color so i try them and the picture turn out better than previous pictures. In a way, I think most of the picture i made in the past are crap and I'm being content with the way i color now.. So effort? idk... i feel like im putting in the same effort yet trying out different stuff.

Chimaera94 In reply to Jay87k [2012-08-22 17:49:16 +0000 UTC]

(How can you be so fast? ^^)
What do you mean by "different ways to color" ?
Speaking of "different stuff" - I'm pretty sure you have also drawn something other than humans - so why won't you upload these pictures? Or am I wrong with this assumption?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jay87k In reply to Chimaera94 [2012-08-22 19:03:41 +0000 UTC]

For example on the coloring. Per say the skin.
I recently am now putting more red toned colored on skins compared to just using pale and a darker pale along with a dark brown color for shadows. Instead im using red toned colors like mahogany to justify those shadows. That way the skin looks more lively and blushy.

Idk... how i can color fast lol... i guess focus?? if i really get into what im doing i generally finish it faster than i expected..

hmmmmmmmm wellllllllll my other pictures suck XP... only recently for the past 6-8 months i've been drawing anime like humans..
I mean i've colored others things like this...[link]
(had to take a picture of it with my android. lol)

Chimaera94 In reply to Jay87k [2012-08-22 19:21:01 +0000 UTC]

Hmm .. you're right.
I'm currently using these pale colours.
Maybe I should follow your example with colouring...

This focus only makes me stay awake until I'm satisfied with the drawing^^
E.g. I have been awake until half past 8 last night...
( Btw: I will upload this picture in aproximately 3 hours )

But this is not bad at all. I guess you portrayed the real life candy and didn't draw it out of your memory?
I was never able to use coloured pencils - I have always chosen the wrong colours ^^
