Description this is what came out of my art trade with . I'm not particularly good at fashion design, but i have to say this piece sure did get me excited.

the theme:
so my partner requested that I design something that was inspired by traditional Japanese clothing motifs, but incorporated into modern street wear.

I did some minor research, and found out (not all too surprisingly) that common colors included red, black, and gold, and I chose these three because they seemed companionable and bold without cancelling each other out.

"tsubame" is the Japanese term for sparrow. I don't have a specific reason for choosing that...I just felt that pattern-wise, it was a lot more Japanese rather than dragons or phoenixes, etc. (those tend to be more frequent in the Chinese brocades)

what I like about this:
my primary inspiration was traditional kimono worn by ladies of the court, and it's easy to tell that those were a) heavy, and b) beautifully layered in a way that revealed varying colors one beneath the other. so I incorporated the "layers" idea in this contemporary piece, and angled each component so that the layer beneath could be seen in some way or another.

(there's the white layer, the red shirt, black top, and then the ornamental gold)

also, the sash-like thing is based on a maiko's obi, which is purposefully tied so that the ends droop long (as a symbol of their celibacy). I thought it'd be fun to throw a few references like these here and there.

what I don't like:
I sort of question how the single sleeve turned out. I like its similarity to a kimono sleeve, and the way it makes the outfit as a whole asymmetrical. but maybe putting both red AND black fabric on there was a little too overboard.

well, anyway....sorry about her anatomy being totally out of whack. I thought about fixing it, and then decided that I've spent way too much time working on her outfit that I finally decided not to care. hope you enjoy, Jay! <3

Haha, and just as I was about to say "you always have the coolest costumes; you should be a fashion designer!"
But seriously, the costume is brilliant and I love that you actually took time to research the piece before drawing it! More plz

Anatomy is tough, don't worry about it.

Uwaaa her outfit is wonderful~! γ‚Ήγƒγ‚‰γ—γ„γ γœοΌThe black and red on the sleeve doesn't look bad, to me at least. I think it balances out the fitted flowy areas around the bust, and creates more of a visual impact. Any, most urban stuff is ridiculously loaded with visual detail anyway. AHHH I like this a lot! (I kinda want to do a male counterpart to this... would you mind?)

After finals, I'll definitely get yours finished! SANKYUU~!!!!
