Description
This is one of two rings for my most recent jewelry project. The project was about relationships, be them formal or conceptual, between the two rings. Mine are about my relationship with time.

In specific to this one, when I was a child I knew when to go in for dinner when the church bell near my house chimed 6. Bells have long been used for a way to know time, and I learned time through bells before I knew how to read a clock.

I also decided, in going with the theme of continuous time, to include roman numerals I through XI, because the XII would be implied by placement, and they were used on clocks/sundials/etc. for hundreds of years before the arabic number system started dominating.

Materials: copper, brass, fine silver, silver solder.... no sterling in this, actually.

It's a hollow form construction, and the bell not only moves, but actually works. Yes, I made everything from scratch, including the bell (can you say a dome and two ring bands plus some fine silver wire and solder? Yes, it was hard as fuck). I used scoring and bending, sweat soldering, dome formation, hammer texture (the roman numerals), and probably other techniques I don't remember the names of. I've spent more than 2 weeks working on this and it's finally done.

And the entire ring makes a beautiful ringing noise if you hold the roof and chime it. It makes me think of my family's dinner bells. Ah, another connection between time and bells. I think they could never end.

Oh, and in the top image, you're actually looking at the back of it. From the front the roman numerals are in the positions they would be in on a clock.
