That's true; I still suck at shading. I wonder how to practice that, though. Most of the tutorials on shading don't help me at all.

I know exactly what you mean. I used to, well, still have (but not as much as before) trouble regarding shading 
First, d/load this: [link] As you can see, the colours are divided into boxes of three, which can work as shadow, normal and highlights. It's not perfect, and you can mix and match, but it saves you a lot of trouble with finding the perfect colour for shadows etc.
Next, I don't know if you use photoshop or have a tablet, but if you do, when shading... first, find a brush size that's usable, then click the toggle brushes thingy, marked here with red circles: [link] unhook shape dynamics and hook off other dynamics. Now the pressure of your tablet pen won't adjust size, but the opacity of your brushstrokes. If you don't have a tablet, use a brush with soft edges, and lower the opacity of your brush, that can work too.
Use the smudge tool on low (0-30) strength to make the colours blend better

I don't actually color in Photoshop; I do it in SAI. Maybe I'll try it with Photoshop once to see
if there's a difference, especially now that I know I can toggle the brushes there. (^^') I've been checking out lots of coloring tutorials and then draw something, but the outcome is usually not quite the same. (T.T) ehehe...
Yes, I use a tablet. This'll be a hell lot harder if I used a mouse. (^^') I wonder how other people can do that anyway, and they are still faster/better than I am.

Oh... hehe I'm so lazy I don't even pick the colors randomly; I usually choose a reference and pick the colors from there. Yeah, even the colors of the shading/light. *cringe* I'll try to practice using the swatches, I mean now that I know what they're good for. lol ^^
