Hi there! May I ask what the wings are made of and how they stay on? Thanks! Lovely work

Hey! They're all made out of craft foam, put together with hot glue. The structure is 9 gauge wire from a hardware store, and its a single piece running from tip to tip on the wings. The center is in a 'U' shape, and slides back between your dress/corset/bra and skin. Corset keeps it in place better for larger wings. The wire ends just past the wing joint in order to help with stability and shape. The wire has to be thick enough to keep shape, 9 gauge works great but it can be rough to cut and shape, I suggest LARGE wire cutters and work gloves. The wire is kept in place by sandwiching it between foam with lots of hot glue. The result isΒ a nice pair of lightweight, bouncy, flexible, strapless wings.

The large white and black wings were made using craft foam 60" rolls you can buy at Joanns for about 8-10$.

Awesome! Sounds pretty simple and doable, thanks! I'm making a Fluttershy outfit, so that helps.

No problem! Fluttershy's wings are a bit different and alittle hard to get the balance right but its doable, I've made accurate rainbow dash wings before and it worked out pretty well. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Very nice! I love the wings... was it hard to make wings with no shoulder straps?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Chochomaru In reply to BrentOGara [2013-07-12 14:58:54 +0000 UTC]

Nope it wasn't hard, its just that they're too heavy to wear if you don't wear a corset to support them. So it may not be a viable option for male cosplayers lololol

BrentOGara In reply to Chochomaru [2013-07-12 18:02:40 +0000 UTC]

Well... if the male cosplayer doesn't mind wearing a corset...

Most of us would mind. Slightly. That's why my cosplay for next year includes a pair of wings with proper (but not too bulky) straps.

Back on the topic at hand.
I believe I've got a photo of you (no, not you brent, Chocomaru) with a friend of mine holding a corn dog. He was cosplaying as shining armor.

Yeah... if I wore a corset just to be able to have strapless wings there would be something wrong with me... more than is usually wrong, at any rate. I might do it to cosplay as Gamer Luna though...

I have photos of Chochomaru too! And I've been to her house... and played Pathfinder with her (my cousin was the GM). She's pretty darn cool.

It's always weird when you meet people who know people you've met in real life on the internet.

Yeah... I love to 'know' people on line after I know them IRL... then I can be confident that I really know who they are and what they are like. It's also good to meet people IRL afterΒ you've talked online, so you can get that 'feel' for them. It isΒ kind of odd to find out that one of your online friends is a RL friend of another of your online friends... I'm not too sure how I deal with that mentally.

Well, perhaps you should head to EFNW next year. Then you can meet people you've met so you can know them while you know them!

I should! ...except my fiancee has this aversion to 'super silly cuteness'. I could totally convince her to go to Sakura-Con though. I'm sure some awesome cosplayers will be at both.

I saw this! Great job on the cosplay contest! As a beginner to cosplay and sewing, I've seen a lot of big, poofy dresses like yours. I'm interested- how do you make a dress like that? Any advice would be helpful, thanks a lot!!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Chochomaru In reply to Fluttershyisbesttree [2013-07-12 15:01:58 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! They are ball gown dresses (or in my case a skirt and bodice) and the best way to get the bigger look is to use hoop skirts and petticoats. I highly suggest buying a hoop skirt because they can be extremely difficult to make, but for petticoats, while still slightly difficult, you can still make yourself. I think the easiest way to see and learn about these items would be to look at a David's Bridal or Wedding dress store and ask them, they can show you the different kinds of petticoats and hoop skirts. From there you just need a dress with enough fabric to be spread out that far. Mine has about 6-8 yards of fabric I believe...
