Description The final image I created for the Space 1999 Anderson blog post featuring a spaceman (modelled superbly by AC) overviewing Moonbase Alpha. The Eagle eyed fan would notice this version differs from the series. While being reasonably close to the original, about 60% of it is actually missing. It was my intention to show that Alpha grew over time but I did hope to have more of the base done before doing this pic.
Another interesting anecdote is a roughly scaled the base here to the filming model instead of scaling things full size like I normally do. Hasn't created a huge difference but it was an interesting experiment.

The Space suit was done the same way as the previous image with the same base elements.
This time I made it far more in line with Space 1999 while still trying to make it look basic.

Made with:
Moondust
Space
The Earth
Vue 10
Particle Illusion.
Google Sketch-up
Photoshop.

Now I think i'm going to move on to something colourful.

Ooh, great picture. I'm no critic so I'll just leave it at that.

Cool!
(Warning for all non-S99 fans out there... I'm about to get very nerdy and technical here...)

This reminds me of a series of modifications I made to the old Technical Manual blueprints of Alpha a few years back... I started with only a few buildings (and substantially smaller existing buildings) and three launchpads, then had  two more 'intermediate' phases showing Alpha's growth until the 1999 version. I also extrapolated to 2001 (in honour of the famous film), but no, I didn't make Alpha look like Clavius Base. I did expand/connect a few of the existing Alpha buildings and added a sixth launch pad. Mind you, this was an extrapolation of the next planned phase within my own continuity, and was not canon with the tv series in any way. (Plus, it was rendered moot by the events of 13 September 1999 anyway.)

Since I was just modifying the existing Tech Manual artwork, I can't really post anything here. I just wanted to point out that I think it's cool that others around the world have thought of similar 'growth' ideas regarding the show.

I also have to point out how neat this illustration looks, of course. The foreground astronaut kind of reminds me of the scene in 2001 with the astronauts near Clavius Base (as the Aries lands), but it also reminds me of the side panel artwork on the old S99 metal lunchbox. Kind of a neat double homage, if intended that way, but also just darned cool to give a sense of personalisation to the whole scene.

(I told you all I was going to get nerdy!)

Thanks Good to know i'm not alone in my thinking. Do your old modifications still survive?

2001 was a big influence for the piece, it's a great scene

I'm not sure exactly where those modifications are. They were simply altered scans of the old Tech Manual that I'd modified in a 'Paint' program or whatever was on my old PC at the time. Since I was modifying an existing work by someone else, I would be reluctant to post them anywhere public for copyright reasons. That old PC is long gone, but those files should still exist on a thumb drive somewhere... what I'd really LOVE to do is make a series of models using the old Alpha kit, showing the stages of development in a physical form. (Another one of those 'if I ever have time to get around to it' projects! I'm sure I've brought this up on the ETF or All Sections Alpha; been ages since I've posted at either of those places, even though I do look around once in a while...)

BTW, I went to the Anderson blog and enjoyed the whole 'Alpha' post you have there. (After which, I got distracted by several of the other posts there! What fun!)

I like the fact you've gone for that monochromatic lunar look with this one. Nice extrapolation of the onscreen design. Alpha looks to me like it was added to over time - it must have started out prettier then the later additions and outlying bits made it look a bit messier/more functional. Often wondered how it could be built -  laying out curved foundations in spacesuits wouldn't be easy.

Cheers I started out colorful, but it just didn't look right. Luckily no-one seems to of minded the Trek style lens flares

Certainly makes a great deal of sense that Alpha was a modular design, intended from the beginning to be extended and enhanced as time went by. Indeed, the finished design in the TV show virtually requires such a paradigm.

I see this as one of the construction crew building Moonbase Alpha, admiring the work in progress from a distance.
