Description Here's a toned clip of the page one of the brand new webcomic Wonderland [link] written by ~RocketShoes and art by me.
I exported the pages for the webcomic as greyscale but here's a close up of the actual tones. Webcomic or not- I'm working the art for printability.
Toning is still a new mysterious process for me, so I hate it. But I hate coloring more so toning it is!
Any suggestions about this clip or the whole page would be the most awesome thing ever.

never mind, haha, I just read where you answered that question. Manga Studio is so difficult for me to figure out. I don't know why becuase I can do anything you can possibly think of with photoshop, but Manga Studio is bewildering. I think I'm mostly thrown off by the exporting options. >_<

I have exactly the same problems

Manga Studio is very backwards and frustrates everyone I know who's ever touched it. Once I figured it out though, I was hooked. If you haven't seen Lincy Chan's tutorials at pencilkiller.com [link] I strongly recommend them. I wish they had been up when I was trying to learn the program, but I still reference it for some things.

the halftone dpi seems too big for my tastes, but that may due to me fullviewing it. what'll be the actual pixel size/print size of the strip? if the strip is small, then ima ok with the tone. but if the strip is like the full-size here on dA, then i would prefer to see the halftone scaled down a little finer, so it creates the optical effect of having a greytone look than something distinctly obvious. i love the way you placed the tone edits; it definately fits the style~!

Ah, no no no! I should have put that in the description these are a fraction of the online page. I totally agree that at this size the dots would drive me nuts. At print these panels are only 2.5 inches tall, a third of the whole page.
I actually export the online strip as flat grays to avoid annoying patterns showing up.

This looks fantastic! Your line quality never failes to amaze me with its concise-ness. I was sad that I couldn't see all of the beautiful tone detail in the actual comic though. *weeps* It always sucks when you work really really hard on getting a gradient just right and it doesn't quite show up as well online. I can't wait to read more of it dearie! *bookmarks page*

Thank you so much!
I really hate sizing down for the web. I could save myself a lot of time if I just did the comic for the internet but I just like seeing things in print too much.

what program do you use for toning?

and I can't really tell if it's good or not, 'cause it's not the whole page

I'm using Manga Studio EX. The whole page is in the link, but it's smaller for online reading.

ah, ok-
I purchased EX last summer, but never got the hang of itT-T

but I got photoshop around october or something, so I've been using that alot more, and I'm happier with that program

EX is a beast. It does some things very well but figuring it out is obnoxious.
Photoshop is a much more versatile program and I switch between photoshop and ex constantly.
If your still interested in Manga Studio, check out the tutorials at pencilkiller.com [link]

yea, that's a good website

but I'm kinda---lazy, and distracted by DA, so I haven't sat down and focused on EX yet-I did make ONE page though, you can check it out in my scraps, lol

Great work! I Like the inking!
The toning make the drawing 'live'..but perhaps it will be better if you used different tone or make the toning more gradient... more darker at some area.
and used some trick so we can see the toning behind text *'my life was never boring' part*(I'm sorry I'm not good in english-hope you can understand what I meant)

The toning is fantastic, looking at just this clip! It's really nicely balanced. What are you using to do it ...?
Great work overall!

ChrissyDelk In reply to kandinsky-prince [2007-04-04 00:20:29 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Whoops forgot to put media. I'm inking at 125% with various nibs and pens. I scan, adjust and resize with the mighty Photoshop. Then I import it into Manga Studio EX 3 where borders, additional linework, toning and lettering take place.

i think the lighting gives it an edgy feel...sorta dark mood but okay since you're going for that.

just don't over do it like most people

or my eyes pop out..ha ha

ChrissyDelk In reply to Lunarjarrett [2007-04-04 00:43:44 +0000 UTC]

I'm trying really hard to find that balance between no tone and overdoing it. You have my permission to smack me upside the head if I ever make your eyes pop out! I'll need the wakeup call if I fall into that horror of overdoneness.
