What books do you have? I wanted to buy one but the only artbook I saw weighted 2Kg! Would cost me 3 times the price of the book on shipping alone. I really want to study his layouts and painting techniques. Thsi is such a great sketch! Great lines and shading.

Re: Mulv
Rockwell is so great that I can't really sum up what I learn from him in one post, but I can address what I got from this study in particular. One thing I always get from Norm is how to compose detail and lead the eye with what you put down. If you look at the black spaces, the white spaces, and the textured spaces in any Rockwell piece, you'll see that while he is working realistically(photorealistic in B&W, which shows how deft he is with contrast) he is also leading the eye and arranging the piece to give space.
That happens in every study of Rockwell. After that, there is also how he marries gesture, costume and facial expression to sum up an archetype, or archetypal behavior. Archetypes are very powerful, both visually and psychologically, and he's able to tap into them, which accounts for the "iconic" tag frequently associated with his work. In this picture, that was on full blast. There isn't a single element in the piece that doesn't point towards the main idea. And he does it all while making the pieces fun and identifiable.
Hope that's the answer you were looking for.
