Description This is what I've been working on lately. A while back, I decided to use one of the backgrounds from my quick sketches, and turn it into a piece of fanart.

I was having some difficulty making a sketch that I found satisfying, and I was searching for some new fantasy novels to read. I found out about Temeraire from the contest, and those books really hit the spot.

Lawrence is in there, too. If you can find him. I tried to size him appropriately.

The color scheme is one of my favorites, but it is one I have used before. The bright warm and cool colors looked much better on this picture than earthy tones. I'll have to make another one that uses those colors soon. Maybe I'll do some more speedpaints for a while.
There might be one more piece of fanart coming, too.

Buildings are one of my weak areas, but I think they turned out decently well in this one. I tried to use a bit more perspective and straighter lines. Comments and criticism are always welcome.

Edit: Improved building textures, using a brick texture from [link]

Awesome work !!

My favorite TΓ©mΓ©raire's representation !!
We are far of the serpentine form of the French cover (I don't really like those covers).

I like your style with a touch of cell-shade

Thanks for the Youtube feature, as well.
Two Steps from Hell makes some epic music. I have a decent amount in my playlists.

Actually, I'm not the one who featured you I just saw the art in the video and saw the dA link so I followed up with it.

Two Steps from Hell are amazing artists. There is a reason why I bought Invincible and Archangel on Itunes.

It's great seeing that the Temeraire Books are popular books among the dragon community; I'm on the third book now and I can't help but feel that the books should have bestseller status if they don't have it already.

Temeraire, as always, looks majestic. While I enjoy the massive beasty, I would not enjoy getting face to face with his wrath anytime soon...

Chromamancer In reply to Kerian-halcyon [2012-05-20 14:20:38 +0000 UTC]

Agreed.

I have been very pleased with the books, as well. The Temeraire series has some of the most well written dragons and characters that I've run into. Naomi Novak knows how to give her dragons character and personality.

I'm glad you like this piece of art, as well.

I've made plenty of practice pieces like that over the years. They can be a good way to get a feel for the composition and perspective within a piece.

I'm honored to see that you've chosen my art to practice with.

Drawing Temeraire's wings was a lot of fun, too.

I like this one! Did you make those clouds in photoshop? If yes, how?? I really want to learn how to draw such awesome clouds!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromamancer In reply to SupaJeffrey [2011-04-28 18:42:42 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.
I did make the clouds in Photoshop.

First, I started with a gradient on the sky.
Then, I used a tree brush I found in a speedpainting pack and modified at some point... That one is really helpful and I use it for clouds rather often. I'm not sure what brush pack it was in anymore, though.

When using that one, I sampled shades from the gradient. After picking a sample, I could darken things to the left of that point, or use the same shade to lighting things to the right of that point. Whenever an area looked too sharp, I would either take a new sample, or use the smudge tool to help smooth things out.

Just ask if you would like a more detailed explanation of any piece of that.
While looking around, I just found a neat cloud tutorial that I'll probably have to try out some time. [link]

Chromamancer In reply to rachaelm5 [2011-04-28 18:12:49 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.
The colors are one of the reasons why I use this time of day so often. The lighting and shadows are usually a bit more exaggerated, and some interesting color schemes are quite possible.
