---

This is one of the projects I've been working on recently.

A few months ago, I saw a really neat leather dragon mask online, made by Zarathus. I thought it was cool, so I decided to try making something myself.
It's been quite some time since I made my Guilmon costume, so it felt really good to make something physical again. This was my first time trying anything like this, and my first time working with leather, so I had to study up a bit.

The majority of the mask was made with leather, but I also have some mesh, to line the eye sockets, craft foam, and plastic horns. The teeth are made with apoxy, so they are a hard resin and feel very tooth like. The jaw is articulated and easy to move, and the eyes have LEDs for lighting, as well. It is breathable enough that I can wear it for quite a while without fatigue setting in. Overall, I had fun working with all kinds of new materials.
It wasn't an easy process, though. Despite planning and making a test run out of craft foam, I had to re-do major portions of the mask a few times. This took much longer and used much more leather than it would have, if I knew what I was doing from the start, but I'm really proud of my final result.

It was a really fun project, and it had some great reactions at the Renaissance Festival this year. I'll probably wear it around at cons sometimes, too.

It's WONDERFUL! I'm so sorry I haven't been around to shower proper compliments on it. I know how hard you worked on this; it even looked great while in progress. So glad you were able to take this to the ren fest this year.

I think one of the great things is how uniquely yours it is. It's very much one of your dragons come to life.

Thank you very much.
I'm quite pleased with how it turned out. It's rather easy to wear, too.

Taking it to the Ren Fest, and Anime Fusion was a lot of fun.
I'm thinking of putting it in the art auction at a con coming up, because I've already started on another. I think I can refine the methods I was using a bit.

I'll get to play around with another color scheme, too.

What are the horns made of?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromamancer In reply to Genevieve124 [2013-10-31 02:23:53 +0000 UTC]

The horns are just some plastic costume horns that I found online and re-painted.
They matched the look that I wanted, and they work quite well on the mask.

that's pretty cool, I can see the effort put into it.

with what did you articulated the mouth?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromamancer In reply to DarkNext [2013-10-31 02:23:18 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much!

The jaw and the top part of the head are two separate pieces. They attach together at the hinges, and there is some internal elastic to close the mouth. It's quite easy to use when wearing the mask.

Did you make or buy those horns?? If you made them would you make me a pair and for what price?

If you bought them, do you remember where from? Or the producer? Or any idea how I could get ahold of a set???

much thanks! Looks awesome!!! LOVE the mouth!

Thank you!

I just bought some rather inexpensive costume horns, and re-painted them.
They're the horns from www.ebay.com/itm/Devil-Demon-H…
They have the look I was hoping for, and they're actually rather sturdy.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromamancer In reply to Endlesshunter [2013-10-16 12:17:41 +0000 UTC]

Maybe you can.

From Cosplay and things like this, I've found that the best way to learn how to do something is to give it a shot.
This took a lot of trial and error, and I made many mistakes along the way, but I'm quite proud of the final result.

Sometimes you can fix mistakes, sometimes you can use them to your advantage. For example, my yellow spray paint splattered a glob of paint on the mask, so I ran with it and added more.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromamancer In reply to TheCandyDragon [2013-10-11 13:22:40 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

It's tough to estimate, because of all the time I spent doing research and learning. Probably around 3 months, total.
Actually building the mask was much faster. When I had to re-do the eyes and forehead, I was able to finish a major portion of the mask in less than a day.
