Description Guilmon costume I made, and wore to Anime Detour 09.

Working on this reminded me to upload those old wallpapers.
It was a lot of fun to make, and wearing it around the convention was a blast.

It was inspired by the costume made by GuardianSandi,

I always liked Guilmon from season 3 of Digimon, but never really considered making a costume until I saw that one.
Then I had to.

Version 2.0 of this costume is here! [link]

Thank you.

It was rather difficult sometimes... I had to use a bit of creativity and persistence, but it was totally worth it in the end. It's the costume that I'm most proud of.
Version 2 adds a more accurate head, with an articulated jaw. [link]

I'll probably continue making small improvements from time to time on this one.

Can you tell me what material was used? D:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromamancer In reply to TommyFoxy [2011-07-07 04:47:08 +0000 UTC]

Sure!

The main bulk of the costume was made of carved upholstery foam. I covered it with some jersey knit fabric, so there was a little stretch. That let me avoid wrinkles when covering pieces of the costume. The main body were modified out of a sweatshirt, and some sweatpants, and the black bands are elastic straps that do a rather good job holding things together.

Just ask if you have questions about any piece of the costume, and I'll do my best to explain.
The foam was the main special material.
This was my first time working with carved foam, and I thought it was a lot of fun.

I was inspired to make this one after seeing GuardianSandi's awesome Guilmon costume. [link]

Oh, and I did fix it up this costume of mine with some improvements last year, like an articulated jaw.

haha, yeaah, I saw guardian sandi's too before i saw yours, and I tried making sense of all her pictures, and I read all about the hat head too, but the problem for me hahaha would be making it....T~T

Chromamancer In reply to pimptero [2010-10-08 02:50:32 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I used carved foam for those parts. It was my first time working with foam.
I went to an upholstery store to buy the foam, and used a standard razor blade from Home Depot to carve it. I tried a turkey knife, but that shredded the foam and was much more difficult to use. I carved a test piece before carving the first head, and I'm glad I did. The second head is much better than the first one, too.

The easiest way to learn that side of things is probably to just give it a shot some time.

Sorry for the late reply. I'm trying to get caught back up on my messages...
The chest is kind of like an umpire plate, in a way. Walking wasn't difficult, that chest plate is trimmed back enough, so it doesn't get in the way of my legs. The shoes are covered in foam, with a fabric covering.

I have a little more time again. If you want, I could take a few pictures of different pieces of the costume to give you a better idea how it was made.

It was really fun to make.
As far as a tutorial goes... I don't have too many process pictures from when I made this, but I'd be glad to answer any questions you might have. I saw the Guilmon costume that GuardianSandi made a few years back, and thought I'd give it a try. So, I tried to use the process pictures she had as a base, and I tried to make a few improvements of my own.

Her process photos can be found here: [link]
Basically, the Guilmon head is a really distracting foam hat, and all the other important areas are made out of carved foam, as well. A cloth mask is used for the neck, so it's rather easy to see out of, too.

It's not as complicated as yours, but I've always wanted to make one of Vegeta.

Chromamancer In reply to Newbie-387 [2010-03-05 13:48:00 +0000 UTC]

That would probably be a fun one, too.
I saw one a while back where his hair was made of foam, to match the unrealistically spiky shape from the show. It was rather awesome.

I've been thinking of making one of those dealers from the Liar Game manga. That would definitely be a fun costume, bu it is rather simple, so it wouldn't be all that complicated either. I still have to think up a new challenge costume.

Newbie-387 In reply to Chromamancer [2010-03-06 04:44:33 +0000 UTC]

Really? I was always a little opposed to using fake hair for Vegeta. I was planning on using my own, grown out a bit. It could work, but getting it to set has proven difficult. Plus, I have a widow's peak too!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromamancer In reply to Newbie-387 [2010-03-07 21:08:29 +0000 UTC]

The fake hair I saw looked REALLY fake. They didn't even try to make it look realistic, just to match the color and shape of Vegetas hair as closely as possible. It worked out rather well, because you could tell that's what they were going for.
There's more than one way to make a costume.

It could work out well if you use your hair, too, especially if you already have a widow's peak.
Getting the shape may be difficult, if you're going for one of the more extreme versions, but I'm sure it'll be a fun costume to make.

It was a ton of fun to make, and to wear at the con.

The first pieces of it I made were the feet and claws. The head and tail came next.
Basically, I got all the foam pieces made, then covered them. The main body was the last thing to be finished. I started a few months before the con, so I didn't have to rush anything.

It inspired a Digimon Tamers group at Anime Detour this year, so I've been thinking about making some improvements. I might try to remake a few pieces to smooth out some of the seams, or to re-make the head with a movable jaw.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromamancer In reply to mashpotato91 [2009-10-28 20:22:30 +0000 UTC]

It all depends on where you get your materials.

Hmm...
I probably spent around $180 total on this costume. So, it was more expensive then some that I've done, but not all that bad.
The glue to hold the foam together was probably the largest hidden cost that I didn't expect, but I got the foam from an upholstery place, so it was rather cheap. I probably spent $60-70 on foam. I would have spend more than double, if I got it at a craft store.
I tried to use some nice materials, though, so I didn't just work with the cheapest stuff I could find.

Overall, it was a bit more than I planned for, but I'm rather proud of how well it turned out.

Wow, this is definately one of the best guilmon cosplays i've seen x3!
I'm planning on cosplaying guilmon in a few months time for a con..Would you mind telling me what sort of material you used to see out of, and the material you used for the whole costume? o:
Anything I find is not good enough! xD;

Chromamancer In reply to Tanglepie [2009-10-18 21:45:28 +0000 UTC]

The main body was modified from a read sweat shirt, and red sweat pants. That part was actually quite easy, and turned out decently well.

The guilmon head is like a fancy hat, so I see out of the neck. I used a jersey knit fabric, there. It's sort of stretchy, and decently easy to see through. At least enough to get around the con and not run into things. I wore the shirt unmodified to the fabric store, so I could match the colors well.
The head, tail, claws, and feet are made out of foam. It was very similar to upholstery foam. I carved out the shapes, then covered them with fabric. The claws have quite fabric, and the other parts are covered with a matching red fabric. The claws on the hands and feet were carved and covered before being glued in place.

That should give you a basic idea, but just ask if you have questions about any of that. I'll be glad to help you out.

Tanglepie In reply to Chromamancer [2009-10-18 23:21:03 +0000 UTC]

Wow, I think i'll consider using a sweat shirt and sweat pants then xDD Seems alot easier!

Jersey knit fabric, eh? Did you use that to cover the head, paws and feet, also? And do you think that would be sold in fabric stores in the UK?

And another question..the head is shaped really well; what did you use to carve the foam like that? o:

I'm sorry for all the questions, and thankyou for being so polite and helpful! x3

Chromamancer In reply to Tanglepie [2009-10-19 00:18:58 +0000 UTC]

Oh, and the colors of the costume are actually quite a bit more accurate than these pictures indicate.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

Chromamancer In reply to Tanglepie [2009-10-19 00:17:22 +0000 UTC]

I hid the seam between the shirt and pants with the tail and belly pieces, so I think it actually turned out decently well, there. I had make a few modifications, to prevent the legs from being way too baggy, for instance. That part was rather easy.

Jersey knit fabric is different from what you would see with a sports jersey. I made that mistake, at first, because I don't know all that much about fabrics. I just pick stuff and go.
The jersey knit fabric is able to stretch, and is less dense of a weave than some other types, so it is easier to see through. I'm sure it is sold in the UK.

I heard that electric knives are good for carving foam, but when I tried one, it just shredded the piece of foam I tested it on.
I used just some of those cheap razor blades for the carving here. I got a kit at Home Depot, for $5 or so, that had a few different types of knives. I used two packs of replacement blades, though. Foam dulls the blades fast, and it's much more difficult to carve well with a dull blade.
I definitely recommend practicing on a smaller piece first. My first one was horrible, but it helped me get a feel for carving foam. The foam came in sheets, so I also had to get some spray glue, to glue them together into larger chunks.

I actually might improve the head for this year. I've carved out a more accurate one in the mean time, and I'm thinking of trying to make a movable jaw or ears.
I don't mind answering questions, so just ask if you have any others.

Tanglepie In reply to Chromamancer [2009-10-19 16:16:03 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I thought there was more to the shirt and trousers xD The seam is hidden well! 8D

Well, I guess I shall definately use jersey knit then c: Sounds good enough! And it looks good enough on your guilmon, too! I'll have to have a hunt around fabric stores and find that x3

Only cheap razor blades? Awesome! Yeah, I thought that something like an electric knife wouldnt be too good xD; At least I can go with a cheaper alternative. (:

It'll be awesome to see any improvements on your guilmon! It looks amazing already!

Thankyou for the help x3 Usually an amateur like me gets ignored! But thankyou so much! <3

Chromamancer In reply to Tanglepie [2009-10-19 16:50:45 +0000 UTC]

If you have any other ideas about how to make your guilmon, at least look into them. You can use the same approach as me, but if you know of any ways to improve on my methods, go ahead.

My costume was originally inspired by GuardianSandi, [link] but I never really tried asking her for tips. I probably should have, in hindsight.
So, I tried to use a similar approach on the parts that looked good, and improve where I could. I don't know if I succeeded or not. I think I can still trim the shirt and pants a bit better.

I'll do my best to help out if you have any other questions.
I'm somewhat of an amateur myself. I've made 4-5 costumes, but this is the one I'm most proud of.

It's hard to say... I would just spend an evening or two per week working on it. Over a span of around three months. I didn't really have to rush to finish any parts of it before the con I wore it at.

I had more fun working on this one than any of the other costumes that I've done. This is the only one I have pictures of, right now, though.

I'll do my best to answer any questions about the construction, if you ask.

Ah okay~ I was just wondering, really. Sadly, my Digimon fandom died a long time ago. If I ever did attempt a cosplay though, I'd probably do Devimon.

And I just realized...Is the Guilmon head on-top of yours? It looks like your face is in the neck, which is pretty cool lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromamancer In reply to Hyuga-Skyjade [2009-06-02 14:37:07 +0000 UTC]

Well, some of the techniques might be applicable to other costumes.

The Guilmon head is basically a really fancy hat. My head is indeed in the neck, and I just have a cloth mask over my face. I have the top of that white piece in front come up to my chin, to smooth things out a bit.
It works out rather well, actually.
I'm even wearing my glasses in that picture.
