Description Progression animation for the Final artwork here

A simple walkthrough of a pure digital painting, as you can tell, no 3D or Photo elements were required, that probably would have made it easier and nicer, but it's a good exercise to just do it this way once in a while

It's also an opportunity to explain how I paint in Photoshop. It's pretty standard in some ways, different in others. I do like drawing lineart for stuff I'm not too used to drawing, it adds a little extra time but I feel better with it. I usually fade it out as I add more detail until I reach a stage where I don't need it anymore.

I prefer colouring by filling in solid colours first, a bit "cartoon-like" so to speak and then start shading from there. When characters are involved (like here) I usually get them to a semi-decent stage first, take a break from them, do the background and then add final touches to the character later. I think this is good since many draw characters and finish them, and then can't be bothered with backgrounds. But if you promise yourself not to finish the character until the background is done, it helps you do it Also, with the background finished before the character - you can then shade and colour the character in a way that's more responsive to the background lighting-wise

Some custom brushes were used, similar is bound to be found on the web anyway. So I can't say anymore other than it's doable to anyone with Photoshop, a tablet and a shit-ton of patience No fancy stuff required

I'm glad it does help out. Though I just hope it takes other people less time to do than me. This took so long that I wouldn't even do a commission of something like this - there's no way I could charge the commissioner fairly without ripping myself off for time

They can be tough to get used to. I did however already know my way around Photoshop before getting mine since I had to do it by mouse for years beforehand After getting my tablet it was moreso just about needing to know how to draw things as they actually are - it can be hard, especially regarding anatomy, perspective and all those critical elements. But it's rewarding when you see the improvement

It's really motivating seeing such a beautiful picture evolve from such a beautiful sketch Usually when I see a really good picture I can't imagine making something as well done, but this animation makes it seem more feasible

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to Fxy [2011-06-22 04:32:53 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! the sketch is certainly a determining factor, many times in the past I've had a bad drawing thought would just become good because I knew how to colour, but it still looked bad. Too bad I can't draw as well as I can colour But I think I managed to do both here, but that's why it took so long

Thankyou! Yeah it's always good when you see artists show how it's done, unfortunately when you're on the learning end of it it always seems easier said than done but practice and observation gets anyone determined enough there eventually

I love this step by step guide. Very helpful in working out how to paint in such detail. I always find it funny how lineart looks so different from the final coloured piece.

Chromattix In reply to Solziv [2011-03-17 09:45:44 +0000 UTC]

It's funny how some people have better lineart than coloured work But I suppose some prefer drawing than colouring, I'm the opposite though, things only start getting interesting for me when colour is added

My lineart's definitely better. Trying to improve my colouring. It often does make things more interesting.

I think maybe I see one thing you can work on with your characters. It seems as though you don't have a complete feel for the 3d-ness of the person, if you know what I mean. The whole depth and flesh of the character. For example, some of the fingers seem like paper to me, because they don't follow the natural directions of the joints. Also, his right leg looks like paper, because you've drawn it more or less in 2d. In reality, the leg would go a bit more towards us, and then go back to the foot, instead of being completely seen from the side, especially since this subject is not seen completely in profile.

In this progression, it seems as though you're skipping a step. You could try doing a step in between the first step and the muscle-step, where you draw in cylinders and balls where the limbs and joints should be. You have good torso, head and pelvis placement and depth, maybe because you actually drew these shapes in the first stage.

Hope this helps, and that it is wanted.

Chromattix In reply to kanefan [2010-12-19 00:14:04 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, but remember throughout my life I've done like...thirty of these kinds of thing, so there's probably a lot more than that which needs to be learned too, I always wondered why people do the whole "cylinders and spheres" thing, I thought they were just trying to work out proportions rather than depth As you can see, it's not like I've read any books or tutorials on the stuff, I kinda had to get this far myself

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kanefan In reply to Chromattix [2010-12-19 01:10:50 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, I see. Well for me at least, it would help with getting both the perspective and depth right. Proportions too I guess, but that's more experience I think, and knowledge about how big stuff are in comparison to each other. But your proportions aren't half-bad, though? `fox-orian has some nice tutorials about depth and perspective, if you're interested in improving your characters. Even though he/she's more of an urban landscape person, and is using them in their tutorials. If you're using cylinders and spheres, they might help though.

And also, don't underestimate yourself: that was about the only thing I could think of as a room for improvement in your painting. I'm sure there are more, but I didn't notice anything else in particular. You've come a long way for not doing "these kinds of thing" so often, IMO. And if you think of the depth in your next painting, I'm sure it will translate. This is coming from the "expert" who hasn't drawn a single line in one and a half years. I will definitely draw and paint some in the holdiays though.

Chromattix In reply to kanefan [2010-12-19 04:52:11 +0000 UTC]

I have to admit using more than one-point perspective scared and confused me until reading those. Good thing I had 3D to gt me past that all this time, though for ones like this I avoid using 3D since then the background would look too good compared to the character and that might look tacky Guess I'll have to see how I go next time, it's a good thing I don't often need to do buildings a lot. I think I don't understand enough about architecture to be able to make a convincing city scene

Hm...the last step seems interesting. How do you put the light on all layers?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to SwissCheesy [2010-12-19 00:38:39 +0000 UTC]

Some of that light (that I was sure of) was painted right on certain layers. Much of it (including the reflected light coming off him) was done on it's own layer, filled wit black and set to "linear dodge" before I started painting it. Black doesn't show on a layer with that blending mode, but it just seems to better bring out the parts that are painted
