You really got to think about what Stark has been through up to this point. Before he became Iron Man, the truth that his weapons were being used for unspeakable evil came crashing down on him on top of shrapnel being lodged in his chest, giving him the epiphany he needed to become a hero. In being a hero, he almost died throwing a nuke into a wormhole, which gave him serious PTSD and anxiety attacks. He tried to give it up for the simple life, but the world needed him to be Iron Man. Then his fear got to him and when his attempt to save the world through Ultron backfired and he ended up killing hundreds in the processes, guilt piled on him heavier than ever which is why he signed the Sokovia Accords. His father-son relationship with Spiderman kicked off soon after, but then he found out the truth about his parents death, which cost him the trust he put into his best friend and comrade, Steve Rogers. But when things finally start looking up for Stark, when he had a son in Peter and an upcoming wife in Pepper, his worst fears came to pass. The one responsible for all his torment arrives, taking his wrath with him, and although he put everything he had into stopping Thanos, it wasn't enough. Genocide was achieved, and Peter, his one chance at being the father he wanted his father to be, died in his arms.
That's just... that's too much. Can you imagine that? Experiencing a crippling fear eat you alive every waking moment before that fear comes to pass because of your failure?
The MCU is amazing.
