Description

Chawelh's (my Green Heron/Havana Brown housecat Tookie Islander [link] ) first challenge illustration for Windsonde. I figured that, like most herons, he would never be in a hurry to get anywhere and would certainly never be caught dashing! His illustration is a bit of a deviation from the challenge, but I wrote a little couplet poem to compensate.

"Tookie island is a dense jungle, but the Tookie Islanders are the right size to move through all the dense vines and foliage. Show yourself whizzing through the tight jungle on wing or on foot."

Chawelh does not whizz or whee;
He slinks around so silently!
On the branch, above the stream,
Thinking sneaky, little schemes.
Creeping slowly with one wish-
Gonna catch a nice big fish!

Nice! Love the poem. I love how you worked the heron nature into him. Love the colors in the painting, too! Gorgeous water, and a really complex pose--nicely done!

Your feather detail always blow me awaaaaaaaay.

The poem is so cute!
also, wow, the pose and expression is so perfectly heron-like here that it took me about a minute to realize that there were cat parts and this was in fact a gryphon, and not an actual animal that exists in the world. Oh the pinecones! and the light on the branches and the water! this is so gorgeous.

Thanks. I essentially took a pose from one of my own heron photos, moved the legs under the wing joints, and replaced the bird "hindquarters" with a cat's; I was hoping to really capture a heron-like pose despite Chawelh being a gryphon, so I'm glad it turned out like that!

That's just a wonderful fantasy of your bird. My favourite one here is the white faced heron. Once, a farmer came to me from mile away, so upset because he had slashed the legs of the heron, with his tractor slasher. Both legs were hanging by skin and I thought "no hope". It was a Sunday so I cleaned them and slit some drinking straws and lined the straws with sterile gauze and set the legs inside. Taped it all up. Had to hand feed hum (named him Quark) for about 8 weeks. Took the legs to the vet to x ray and they had healed and could support him as he landed and fed. One of my longest bird rehabs. he still calls on his way past the lagoon.

That's amazing; I'm glad it was a successful rehabilitation. I work part time at a raptor rehab center, and I'm often surprised by how resilient an animal with the will to live can be. It was nice of that farmer to pick the bird up and bring him to someone who could take care of him. I think a lot of people wouldn't bother.

Oh, so pretty... I love the cooled, shadowy colors, and the lovely highlights in the water.

And that is the best Tookie Poem ever XD

Chawelh prides himself on being the sliest little sneak possible! I won't be working on any more of his challenge illustrations for a while, but if your Kingfisher Tookie has a ref by the time I start, I'd love to include him competing over a fish with Chawelh in his second challenge.

And I'd love to put Chalweh into my little still-no-drawn derpface's challenges too!

Lovely as usual! Your rendering of feathers is just to die for. And I love the little sprays of fir needles.

The only critique would be the log in the water looks a bit odd. I think maybe there need to be some ripples radiating from its edges as it interacts with the water lapping on it?

Very cool design! Neat to see a heron beak on a gryphon for a change. I like the look.

wonderful painting

Great details, especially the feathers
There could be a bit more highlights placed on the animal,
to make it really standout from the background

Well done!
