Description First adult challenge for Kiya ([link] ).

Your new role as a clan member comes with both new responsibilities and new rewards. Show yourself performing an activity relating to the clan you have chosen.

Ever since she was a little gryphlet, Kiya loved to create. As an adult she joined the Samhradh clan, specializing in jewelry work and metalsmithing. Her flexible Harrier-hawk wrists and opposable halluxes were adept at handling fine detail; even so, she looked forward to one day learning the magic that would allow her to temporarily take human form.

After spying on the human villages, Kiya had started teaching herself to metalsmith, with so false starts she almost gave up a few times. Now that she was getting the hang of it (though she was nowhere near as sophisticated as the humans), gold--a soft and appealing metal--was quickly becoming her favorite material.

Kiya knew that Daine, one of her fellow Samhradh Grandesques, had searched all over Windsonde for the best places to collect precious stones, and she asked the Burrowing Owl gryphon if she had ever seen any good deposits of the yellow metal. To Kiya's delight, Daine was willing to share her knowledge. Together they flew to a shallow canyon river with a primitive stone ford. The area was rich with precious stones and metals! Perched on the ford, Kiya panned (her neighbor had given her an odd look while she banged the unusual--for a gryphon--tool into shape at her tiny forge) while Daine upheld a beautiful garnet she had plucked from the stones on the river bed.

You are amazing with backgrounds! As everyone said, the depth and detail really solidify the whole piece. I thought it was a photomanip or something in the thumbnail. Gorgeous! The autumn trees are my favorite part.

And what a great idea for the story. Kiya and Daine sound like they'd be great friends!

Thank you. I know I'm almost finished with the picture when I'm finished with the background--it usually takes up 60-80% of the full work time.

This is wonderful! I love the depth and the realism you put into this piece. The reflection in the water is also very well done. Great job!

I had fun with the idea of a gryphon doing something as mundane and tedious as panning for gold

So cool! I envy all the detail you get into every part of your pieces. I'm always "oh yeah, I guess I need a background", but you really go all out with yours. So gorgeous.

I started always doing the background first (at least the majority); otherwise I get lazy about it. I'm fond of drawing rocks though, and water is challenging but beautiful so it's more fun than frustrating.

Smart! I really need to make myself do that. I'm currently working on a Phantom comic (hoping to post it in the next couple of weeks -- Christmas is going to get in the way!), and I... meeeeant to do some backgrounds. Insteads, I wound up with gradients, and a curtain. Sigh! Luckily it's all in layers, so I can drop something in, still, if I feel more ambitious.

And the fact that you enjoy painting the rocks and water definitely shows! That's how I am about drawing hair, actually. I just love it. The texture and highlights are so fun.

I eagerly anticipate this phantom comic! and I hate drawing hair; power to you!! (I probably just need more practice)

The comic is the dumbest thing ever! I thought it up while I was chatting with Biskuits and Kryss LaBryn, and couldn't stop giggling at my own idiocy. I've been working on it for like... two weeks. It's only ten panels, but I'm slow at this stuff! Practice will hopefully make me speedier.

Thank you! I have got a great three-panel idea planned for Valcaur's third challenge featuring Skerry (and also the Poofia).

I really like how realistic you made everything. The stream and the rocks are a perfect setting for Kiya and her friend. The only thing that sticks out a tiny bit to me is that the gryphons arent shaded the same way as their background, but overall its not that noticable. I love all the details in this piece, its great!
