Description Name: Kiya
African Harrier-Hawk/Sand Cat (Polyboroides typus/Felis margarita)
Aery: Grandesque
Clan: Samhradh
Current rank: Final Stage
Gender: Female
Personality: Kiya is good-natured and friendly with those in her own aerie or Twistoult, but cordial at best to most Skrekrill gryphons. She is inherently skittish and non-confrontational, which clashes with her love of exploration and vigilant Grandesque patriotism. Kiya is the sort who just has to investigate anything mysterious, but startles easily at the unexpected. As a young gryphon, she was slightly shy and cowardly. More than anything, she was terrified of getting into a fight. During her first real battle ciameth.deviantart.com/art/G-K… Kiya was surprised to find she relished the rush of action and danger. Ever since then, she's been much bolder. Adult Kiya is no longer afraid to stand up to gryphons tougher than herself. She still avoids a fight whenever possible, and relies on bravado to convince possible opponents that this scrawny Harrier-Hawk might not be the right gryphon to mess with. Just in case it comes to a fight, she's been taking lessons in claw-to-claw combat from Grandesque's fighters... though she's inclined to skedaddle if it looks like she might come to serious harm.
Kiya is a Samhradh craftsgryphon. She learned to take human form so that she could study blacksmithing and was dismayed to learn that after all her work, the humans of Dail would not accept a female apprentice. Not to be deterred, Kiya studied the craft subversively and has converted the ridge of her aerie to a miniature forge. While she once specialized strictly in jewelry, her interests have turned toward armor and sharpened steel talon-tips.
Edit: fixed proportions on standing profile, added battle gloves, and updated info under personality.

I would rather keep these characters to myself.  I am not fully finished fleshing out their personalities and history.

How do you get that coloring effect/style?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ciameth In reply to Spookeys [2011-03-25 05:19:24 +0000 UTC]

I used the fine point pen for the line art and then the oil pastel tool for the coloring in Corel Painter, and I treated them the same as I would actual pen/oil pastel. In real life, I apply oil pastel thick and solid, and draw on additional color at differing pressures to do most of the color mixing, mostly because I don't like to get my fingers dirty with smudging if I don't have to I try not to overuse effects you can use in digital painting that can't be applied to traditional.
