Description Name: Chawelh
Green Heron/Havana Brown domestic cat (Butorides virescens/Felis catus)
Aerie: None/Tookie Island
Current rank: Young gryphon
Gender: Male
Personality: Chawelh is an incorrigible liar and playfully sneaky little bastard. He has two great delights. One is stalking--fellow Islanders, fish, birds, insects, Big Gryphs--he doesn't care, and will stand motionless for up to an hour in pursuit of the perfect ambush. The second is plucking feathers from any Big Gryph brave enough to set foot on Tookie Island. His collection, mounted on a special headband, has grown over time. Chawelh's proudest feather possession is a Golden Eagle gryphon secondary covert he claims came from "the grandest big big big-gryph chief" herself, which is most certainly a lie. The greater mystery is not which Golden Eagle gryph the feather actually came from, but how the Tookie Islanders even know about Queen Titania. Possibly some poor, roasted Grandesque explorer carried a picture of his Queen with him on his travels, and it was discovered post-feast by a lucky Islander.

I designed Chawelh long before my mainland gryphon Kiya ciameth.deviantart.com/art/Kiy… (as Green Herons are one of my favorite birds), but took my time starting his ref sheet and developing a proper Tookie personality for him.

Can I use this character on my literature?

I would rather keep these characters to myself.  I am not fully finished fleshing out their personalities and history.

Oooh a heron gryph! :D Herons are delightfully goofy and elegant all at the same time. Great anatomy, too! And *points* I think I see one of Equinox's feathers in his headband :[ Darn Tookies stealing her poor feathers!

Yes, he loves his peregrine feather! I didn't spend a huge amount of time on detailing accuracy, but in addition to his Golden Eagle secondary covert, he also has a Red-Tail tail feather, a Red-Shouldered Hawk primary, a Ferruginous Hawk underwing covert, and the peregrine primary. I'm not sure he actually plucked all of them like he says (those flight feathers would take a mighty effort for such a tiny gryph to yank out, especially while attached to a live gryphon, though he does live to try ) or if some of them were picked up off the ground, but he is always wanting to add more!

Hahahah well ~avalonauggie 's Tookie, Mimsy, happened to pluck quite a bunch from Equinox during her first venture onto Tookie island. I'm sure there were quite a few on the ground that she missed!

And that's quite a headband :0 Personally I'd be quite wary of a heron-gryph. Those beaks are very powerful.

He probably did thieve from Mimsy; I'd feel bad for Equinox if she was attacked by two Tookies during her adventure! I'm sure being pecked on the head by Chawelh too would hurt quite a lot!

Chawelh could have very well hammered a hole through Equinox's head with that beak! :0

Beautiful ref sheet. Love the colouring and it looks very traditional.

I like the colouration of this gryphon, and the heron foreparts. Herons are underappreciated.

:Laughs; I love the "Elegant to Goofy" bit... And the feather headband is awesome! Well... the Big-Gryphs may not think so... but I do!

Green herons rock. Such little characters. Combine that with a domestic cat? Awesome. Well done!

Ahhhhh why are you so cool?!

I love the idea for this gryph and I love whatever brushes you used to color him. I love how the head-dress study looks like its realmedia. Awesome stuff!

Thanks, I adore Green Herons so I've been wanting to make one into a gryph for the long time! The colors are just oil pastel (which is probably my fav medium in traditional media) in Corel Painter.

Very cute!

And I love his story! Makes me kinda wish it was true that he had one of the Queen's feathers. XD

That would be cool, but somehow I can't picture Titania prancing around Tookie Island on her tiny little feet . Does she ever even leave the aerie?

BGArts In reply to Ciameth [2010-11-21 02:16:35 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, very true....

Maybe when she was younger? Definitely not anymore. Her lardiness wouldn't leave her precious aerie now.

He is the best. No, really.
I wonder if he ever met(or plucked) the crazy mean big gryph chief?
(also can my kingfeeesher Tookie and Chawelh be friends once I get around to finishing the feesher's ref sheet?)

Ooh Kingfisher! I was planning out Chawelh's first challenge and I wanted to have him racing someone to the creek or a choice fish.

I just love watching them silently, slowly stalk little aquatic animals at the local creek. Even when they're just walking down the bank they still look like they're sneaking. Aesthetically, they're my favorite species of bird. My living room wall boasts a giant scene of a tule marsh with a green heron as the focus
