They look silly if you're trying to make it a print and the print has a printed border. I wish I could find the original because I don't know if the cropping was originally like that. I can't make this a print anyway... It's still too small. Blah. I think it's probably on a disc somewhere. I should stop caring about a photo that's 5 years old. I'm a better photographer than this now.

Its not horrible, just a little tight. It not a bad thing to care about your past work, even though you may not like it anymore its still something to be respected in a way I think.

I absolutley love the look--the fedora and the rose with the black and white is amazing... and the fact that they'relying neatly on the floor strikes me as well. I very much like the look of this photo.

Regardless of texture, (of which honestly fabric, craqulature and the rose don't really clash significantly, barely at all, I find it stirring personally) the composition is what really makes this. the bar the hat and the rose make a classic L line of attraction, the rosebud, the handle and the background form a triangle that the eye follows..
Check the balance, seriously, there is a perfectly equal balance of light and dark, without appearing monotonous. the horizon is a 1/3rd from the top, classic.
Whoever you've been showing this too has no idea what they are talking about.
Normally I leave critique, in this case it's good and fufills everything technically, anything I'd suggest would be purely taste, so on the artistic side, there is nothing really wrong, except maybe the slightly higher amount of texture vs smooth, but it's hardly overwhelming or considered innappropriate and does not take anything away from the picture.
Plus, no one can go wrong with this, I mean really, the design of the handle in the back, the fedora, rose, thick rug, it gives it that 1920's detective sense, it's really got feeling to it.

I'm glad you like it so much. It is true that the people I was originally showing it to didn't know much, if anything at all, about photography. Also, it was when I had just started really getting into photography.

Ah yeah, sometimes as an artist it's good to know when to take critique and apply it, sometimes it's good to know when to tell them where to shove it.

That is the most wonderful picture I've seen in a long time!
My love for fedoras is only going to grow ever bigger now. ^^
Just for my own strange tastes I wouldn't have the rose just lying there straight since the fedora's angle is already flat. I would have tilted the rose or placed it adjacent to the fedora instead of parallel.
Otherwise I think it's a lovely black and white shot! Best thing about it is the fact that you don't need to worry about the rose matching the fedora's color.

Thanks for the comment and the criticism. I did try different angles with the rose, but for some reason it did not look as nice to me or something else ended up being wrong with the image. C'est la vie, though, right?
