Description This plushie.
I have never been prouder of anything in my life.

Tavros Nitram from Homestuck

I drew this pattern
myself
He's made of felt, and sewn by machine
He's about 15/16 inches tall and his horns are nearly a foot across
His sandals come off :>

He was my trial-and-error plushie, because now I know what I have to differently in the future for others.
He's gonna be remade out of minky in a while, but for now, he's my special dollbaby <3

He's very cuddly and I slept with him for weeks after making him, but I had to stop because his face is getting cracks in it. I need to use a different brand of iron on transfer in the future.

I put my sunglasses on him sometimes so he can be a cool kid :>

Welcome c:
Use model magic? I have a sheet load of them and im making Terezi's horns, they just take a few days to dry. They might be a little big though, but I'll see what my Moirail says about it ;3;

That's so cute!
I made a John doll, and for his face I used felt for his eyes and fabric paint for his mouth and nose, you could try drawing it rather than the iron on

Thank you very much. >//u//>
He was a little pain in my butt the whole time.

Did you really? Sounds adorable!
I would LOVE to see him <3

I know, I've made plushies in the past and always painted their faces on. It just... I don't like it as much. Iron-on just feels cleaner to me.
It's only a matter of finding a good one that won't crack and peel.

I've been meaning to post pictures up, but I've been busy learning how to make Doll hair for the rose doll I'm making.

Btw, How did you make the ears so cute?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CJBatBrain In reply to spazzTerror [2011-09-24 14:34:44 +0000 UTC]

Oh, doll hair really isn't that complicated.

....... Depending on what you're making it out of.

Um... his ears, I just sewed the two halves together, turned em inside out, and then sewed a ridge like half a centimeter in.And I put a little bit of scrap felt inside the smaller middle part just to make it a little rounder.
I used to really hate ears because I always wound up accidentally making them too small.

spazzTerror In reply to CJBatBrain [2011-09-25 17:27:45 +0000 UTC]

yarn. it is being made of yarn. not too bad, but time consuming because of the type I happened to choose.

And the ears are adorable! I actually modified an existing doll pattern that I had bought at work, and the ears it came with look retarded, so I left them off all but the first doll

CJBatBrain In reply to spazzTerror [2011-09-26 02:17:57 +0000 UTC]

I've never used yarn before, only felt.
What's your main material?
Felt or some other fabric?

Thank you >//u//>
They're not that hard to do once you figure out a good size and shape, because they're difficult and strange looking if you make them too small for the head.

spazzTerror In reply to CJBatBrain [2011-09-27 19:14:31 +0000 UTC]

I use cotton, twill, knit, and a really soft fabric I have to back with interfacing that I can't remember the name of off the top of my head.

I work at a fabric store so I get and use what seems sturdy and feels nice.

How do you make the hair with felt? I used felt when I made John and Dave, but that's because they have short hair and I just glued it to the head flat.

Ohhhhh my god do you really?
I want to get a job at JoAnn's so badly, because I've been in there so many times within the last couple months I've lost count haha

Nice choiced, by the way. I've been making mine with felt just because they're practice for my real ones later on <3

I made Tav's mohawk with triangles of felt that i pinched at one side and glued flat at the bottom so they stuck up? It took like an hour to get them all cut out and glued on.

spazzTerror In reply to CJBatBrain [2011-09-28 01:45:26 +0000 UTC]

ah okay okay. I see how that would work now.

I work at Hancock Fabrics, which is pretty neat. I suggest sportswear twill for the dolls, or JoAnn's has this really nice silky knit that I just bought 2 yards of to make a set of fan trolls for a friend.

CJBatBrain In reply to spazzTerror [2011-09-29 22:00:36 +0000 UTC]

Niiice, how big are you making them?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

spazzTerror In reply to CJBatBrain [2011-09-30 17:39:37 +0000 UTC]

they sit at maybe 9 inches, possibly?

I'm not really sure, I used a simplicity pattern to do it and I just tweak it a little depending on what doll I'm doing. But the cool bit is I can get patterns for different doll clothes and tweak those to fit too

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CJBatBrain In reply to spazzTerror [2011-09-30 17:59:54 +0000 UTC]

What simplicity pattern??
I didn't know they made doll patterns that's fucking awesome!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

spazzTerror In reply to CJBatBrain [2011-09-30 18:20:25 +0000 UTC]

yeah! if you look in the pattern books at JoAnn's, in the craft section of the books most of them have a doll pattern or two. I know Mcalls has quite a few doll clothes patterns.

Anyway, the pattern is Simplicity 2809.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CJBatBrain In reply to spazzTerror [2011-09-30 19:53:13 +0000 UTC]

That's actually an adorable pattern
The round head pattern is the only thing I've gotten from an outside source, though.
I actually drew my own pattern for my plushies :>

Do they really?
All the more reason to look at McCalls again.

My pants seemed appropriate.

I can only imagine! I woulda freaked out during the middle of it and not finished you must have an amazing amount of patience! Especially cause you got it to look so amazing!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CJBatBrain In reply to teandsugar [2011-09-01 15:24:31 +0000 UTC]

It wasn't really that time-consuming, just... a bit awkward and fiddly.
And I really hate turning plushies, because that part IS time-consuming and difficult. Especially plushies with really skinny limbs.

And stuffing skinny limbs. Takes a lot of patience.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

teandsugar In reply to CJBatBrain [2011-09-01 19:15:36 +0000 UTC]

oh mkay~! turning plushies? yeah stuffing skinny plushie limbs does seem hard D: but you did a very nice job, i'd say!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CJBatBrain In reply to teandsugar [2011-09-01 19:24:22 +0000 UTC]

>///u///>

why thank you.
And yeah, you have to sew inside out, so turning the skinny limbs right-side-out is pretty tough.

It usually involves a crochet hook and a lot of safety pins and swearing and rage and throwing the body against the walls in frustration.

hehe....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

teandsugar In reply to CJBatBrain [2011-09-01 21:38:45 +0000 UTC]

ohhh that turning! got it yeah that definitely seems like it would be hard!!

Oh wow X3 I've never worked with a plushie with long limbs so I can't exactly relate but it sounds like it would be very frustrating!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CJBatBrain In reply to teandsugar [2011-09-01 21:44:31 +0000 UTC]

It is, haha

I've murdered an old paintbrush of mine by using it so shove stuffing in place.
It works really well because the bristles got all spread out, and they grab the whole blob of stuffing and move it around really effectively.

It's actually a lot of fun making bigger plushies, because of the clothing ;>
Tav here was simple, but at some point in the near future I'm gonna be making Eridan.
And boy, is that gonna be a treat.

/rubs hands together evilly

To be completely honest, I already made his cape
and he's like

Third on my list right now
of plushies to make

and fifth on my general list because I have two others I need to finish for my moirail

but his cape's done xD

teandsugar In reply to CJBatBrain [2011-09-01 21:54:03 +0000 UTC]

omg haha niceee XD well hey there's another use for a paintbrush than painting right there!

omg that is amazing ;u;
haha yeah he seems the hardest! but i guess that makes it pretty rewarding to finish making him too c:

omggg pictures must be put up when this is done?

oh which ones are those? c:

hehe the most important part!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CJBatBrain In reply to teandsugar [2011-09-01 23:49:54 +0000 UTC]

Of course, what kind of Eridan doesn't have a cape??

I'm making her Zim and Dib :>

They're actually the plushies I drew the pattern for in the first place, but I liked it so much it's what I'm using for all my plushies.

Just.... Modified to be a little chubbier than Zim and Dib.
If you can even believe it, Zim and Dib are skinnier all over than Tav here.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

teandsugar In reply to CJBatBrain [2011-09-03 19:04:18 +0000 UTC]

exactly! It would be insanity!

Oh cool!!! :>

oh my gosh they're skinnier? that's possible? O:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CJBatBrain In reply to teandsugar [2011-09-03 22:39:19 +0000 UTC]

yes they are!
I can circle their waists with just one hand, but I need both hands for Tav :>
