Description These are the colors that can be seen in BC's, of course there are different markings and some black bis are mostly white with black patches. Some useful information for anyone who wants to buy a BC puppy (same rules apply to Australian Shepherds) or is new to breeding them: the only way to get a red (chocolate) is that both parents MUST have the red gene. Meaning, either both parents should be red, one must be red and the other (regardless of color) MUST have the red gene, or both MUST have the red gene even if they aren't red. There are some special rules with merles. In order to get a merle, one parent MUST be a merle. The gene can only be passed on directly, meaning a solid parent won't have it, even if one of its parents was a merle. Two merles should NEVER be bred together. It can cause a double dilute (or white gene), which can cause problems like blindness and or deafness. Merles should ONLY ever be bred with a tri or bi, breeding them with brindles or sables should be left to professional breeders. To get a brindle, one parent must be brindle. Though all eye colors can appear in all coat colors, blue and multicolored eyes are more common in merles because blue eyes are part of the merle gene. Both parents should carry the blue eyed gene to pass it on to their pups, but if a merle has blue eyes, it may not have the blue eyed gene, it may just be the merle gene. Because BC's are mostly bred for work and not looks, black bi and black tri are the most common colors. Merle BCs are rare while merle in Aussies is much more common, since BCs are mostly bred for work and not looks or color. They come in different coat types; rough (long haired) and smooth (short haired). Ears can be dropped, semi-erect, or fully pricked.
I am not a breeder, but I think this is important information to know anyway.
