Description Inspired by 's excellent "My Little Maniraptor" images, as well as the Pony/Pterosaur fusions by this guy: I decided to make my own set of prehistoricalized Ponies!

I present to you, MLP: My Little Pterosaur!

Now, like Albertonykus and NOKAPIplz, I was rather specific about which species represented which type of pony:

Twilight and Rarity are both Pteranodonts. Specifically, Twilight is the famous Pteranodon Longiceps (naturally, the leader is the most famous pterosaur) and Rarity is the much flashier Pteranodon Sternbergi/"Geosternbergia" (I really hate that name). I figured it would make sense for the pterosaurs with the famous crests to be the ponies with the magic horns. And yes, I am aware that female Pteranodons didn't have large crests. I consider this an acceptable break from reality.

Applejack and Pinkie Pie are both Tapejaras. Tapejara is believed to have been a fruit-eater, matching perfectly with AJ's apple farming and Pinkie's sweet tooth. Of course, apples didn't exist in the time of the dinosaurs...but then again, neither did balloons. Additionally, Tapejara are believed to have been more terrestrial animals, preferring to spend time on the ground than in the air. I figured that would fit well with the Earth ponies.

As a disclaimer, I do not believe that tapejarid pterosaurs were habitual fruit-eaters, although I do think that fruit made up at least part of their diets.

Rainbow Dash is a Nyctosaurus. Nyctosaurus was believed to be the most aerial pterosaur there was, to the point that it no longer had its nifty little wing claws that helped pterosaurs walk on all fours! Since Rainbow Dash quite obviously prefers flying to walking, a Nyctosaurus seemed perfect for her. Plus, I made her wacky, antler-crest rainbow colored! And if I were able to draw the whole thing, it would be shaped like a lightning bolt!

And finally, Fluttershy. Fluttershy was harder than the others because I couldn't cast her as a Nyctosaurus like Rainbow; Fluttershy prefers walking over flying, something that is fine and dandy for a Pegasus but would be a death sentence for a Nyctosaurus. So what pterosaur could I make Fluttershy?

In the end, I made her a Thalassodromeus. Why? Because Thalassodromeus was a very deceptive pterosaur! For a long time after it was discovered, people assumed it was a gentle fish-eater, which skimmed the surface of the water to catch fish. We now know, however, that not only would such an action be impossible for Thalassodromeus, but that it was more likely to have lived on and around dry land than anywhere near water. Further research concluded that Thalassodromeus was actually an active and violent predator, using its huge, hooked beak to grab and kill prey with crushing bite.Β

How does that tie into Fluttershy, you ask? Well, it kind of reminded me of how, at first glance, Fluttershy seems like a meek little weakling. But when you really get to know her, you see that underneath that shy, demure exterior is a fiery temper and sheer strength and determination!

So there you have it! The Mane Six as pterosaurs! If I had put Spike and the Princesses in the picture, I would have made Spike a generic Maniraptor and the Princesses a pair of Azhdarchids.

Cool!... but given their crests, doesn't this make Twilight and Rarity dudes in drag?

Well, it probably would if they weren't cartoon pterosaurs XD

In all seriousness, though, Twi and Rarity were the only parts of the picture (besides everypony's hair andΒ Rainbow's crest if the whole thing had been visible) where I decided that accuracy should be ignored; Pteranodon's crest is so famous that not a lot of people realize that only males had the large crests and that females either had small crests or no crests at all (I believe the only dinosaur media I've seen that showed that were "The Land Before Time" and "Flying Monsters 3D" by SirΒ David Attenborough). But I needed something to act as an analog for a unicorn's horn, and Pteranodon crests seemed like the perfect fit (they stick out somewhat more upwardly than the crests of other pterosaurs, so it would be easier for Twilight and Rarity to point their crests at things and make magic)

Thanks for the comment!

Hahahaha I love that their cutie marks are on their crests

I was gonna put them on their flanks too, but I figured it would make more sense and be easier to see if I put them on their crests

Rainbow Dash was the exception because her crest doesn't have a flap of skin on it (or at least, there's no evidence for Nyctosaurus having a flap of skin on its crest; according to the current theories, such a flap would be a hindrance to flight so it was unlikely), so I had to get creative. I decided to make her crest physically resemble her cutie mark instead, being rainbow-colored and, had I been able to include the whole crest, shaped like a lightning bolt.Β

Thank you for the comment!
