Description Both of Riley's pride and joy thunder through Furness Vale with the Buxton Spa Express, just ahead of a very large storm front on 5th November 2011.

Note *irwingcommand stood to the left of this shot. Watching as I stole what he held dear right in front of his very eyes.

EDIT: Brightened it slightly and watermarked it.

This photograph, more than many, shows the power of a steam engine at work. Almost a black-and-white image, the hint of color in the troubled sky lends depth and drama to the shot. in addition, the brightness of the light on the tops of the steam billows keeps the shot from being too gloomy. I especially like the way the steam merges with the clouds to make the two indistinguishable, as if the engine is creating the weather. The engine's light glinting off the rail also brings the viewer's eye to the tracks, the pathway to far-flung destinations, making the viewer wonder where it's taking its burden of cars. Where this shot further succeeds is that it looks almost like a painting. Power, drama, mystery, romance -- they're all here in this masterful shot. Kudos.

Kill steal!

Bummer about the man on the platform though, he distracts just a bit. Shop him out?

The Storm Bringer and The Rainmaker should maybe get together on the same train sometime, maybe it'd create a hole in the space and time continuum...

Thanks for the comments

A great big train... full of fog?

CJSutcliffe In reply to Kerl-of-Fox-County [2011-11-08 00:45:06 +0000 UTC]

I fail to see the connection between steam emissions and fog here. Fog is cold and tasteless, steam keeps you warm and tastes of roasted nuts. Which is why that John Carpenter film was called "The Fog" and not "The Steam", cos steam keeps you alive (ish), whereas fog gives you hypothermia.

This is true. Ask any of my friends, I'll tell you that the scent of steam and warm oil is one of my favourites in the whole world, if not the absolute favourite.

I merely took the oppurtunity to quote an old Navy Lark episode, where they mistook a ship for some kind of mobile fog-layer

The only Navy Lark episode I ever heard was the ep where they tested the totally indestructible "whoosh bang all gone Pertwee" shell.

Funnily enough, the quote is from the first episode of the next series. With the talpinium (or whoosh bang all gone Pertwee) shell having blown the superstructure off Troutbridge, the crew who'd abandoned ship fail to identify and mis-read the ships number, F09, as FOG so assume it's a great big barge full of fog! Which is perfectly logical....

And kudos for the watermark, too. This shot would have been ruined by the standard dA mark, but what you've chosen is excellent.

I never use the standard DA watermark. That is just like uploading DA's watermark into your gallery gazillions of times, it's so so distracting.

loganberrybunny In reply to CJSutcliffe [2011-11-15 19:05:00 +0000 UTC]

I think the way you've done it is much better. Apart from anything else, it's so subtle that anyone pinching the pic probably wouldn't notice it was there until too late.

I must admit that one's defeated me! Is it one of those where the watermark is "hidden" by means of Photoshoppery?
