Description The East vs. The West.
The old vs. the new.
The steam vs. the electric.
The loco vs. the unit.

To the right, an LNER A4, one of 35 locomotives that as Mallard proved in 1938 are among the fastest in the world.

To the left, a British Rail Class 390 Pendolino EMU, a tilting train operated by Virgin which holds the southbound non stop record from Glasgow to London fully loaded.

I know which one I'd rather have...

Just shows that the modern engine still has kept the A4's shape.

I'm guessing you'd pick Bittern!

It just show you that a 1930 steam loco still looks modern. Next to a Pendleno .

I've noticed the crowd gathering around the steam engine...how many people do you think were crowding around the electric train?

Very few I expect, didn't care that much to notice.

The shape is remarkably similar isn't it.

It is, it shows the evolution of the same basic design principles in streamlining.

Yeah, fascinating really that old Nigel got it so damn well shaped the best part of a hundred years ago and that the fastest trains in the UK today can manage maybe 20 miles an hour faster than Mallard's record if they were actually allowed to try.

Blitzkriegoperative [2011-09-05 15:01:42 +0000 UTC]

The Mallard was such a regal and elegant machine.

Rock-Raider [2010-12-12 21:12:11 +0000 UTC]

Nice picture. Those engines looks quite regal from this angle.

Hmmm. Never thought about it before, but I wonder if Pendolino used the A4 as inspiration for the 390? Check out the similar shaped fronts.

zaco21 In reply to CarlPearce [2016-09-20 10:44:24 +0000 UTC]

No, just good ol' aerodynamics.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CarlPearce In reply to zaco21 [2016-10-15 15:24:24 +0000 UTC]

It's a very specific shape, though. If it was just aerodynamics then surely it'd be shaped like a rocket.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zaco21 In reply to CarlPearce [2016-10-15 15:36:58 +0000 UTC]

Not really. The rocket travels up in the air. The train travels on track on land. The shape is quite common.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CarlPearce In reply to zaco21 [2016-10-15 18:18:37 +0000 UTC]

Formula one cars travel on the land at great speed as do bullet trains. But they don't have that tapered earthworm head shape. Only these two engines seem to. The previous have the conical rocket shape.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zaco21 In reply to CarlPearce [2016-10-15 20:17:56 +0000 UTC]

Formula One cars don't have conical rocket shapes. Not even their noses. Bullet trains only traveled at 200 kph until the 1980s. The TGV had a big influence on the Pendolino. The LNER had no influence because they started from scratch in the 1970s.

CarlPearce In reply to zaco21 [2016-10-16 12:19:43 +0000 UTC]

Well F1s hardly brick-shaped, are they? They're a flattened cone. That would be considered conical. People get their influences from everywhere. I don't see why the Pendolino designers wouldn't have looked at the fasted ever steam locomotive and thought, ah, they may be onto something there. I'm just looking at it. From a designer's perspective. If I see something that bloody works and does it's job well, I take notice.

zaco21 In reply to CarlPearce [2016-10-17 07:41:49 +0000 UTC]

"Well F1s hardly brick-shaped, are they?"

Irrelevant.

"They're a flattened cone."

No. Besides, flattened cones AREN'T cones anymore.

"That would be considered conical."

No, it wouldn't. If you continue with the "it's conical" argument that means you can't find a better explanation and you've lost the argument.

"People get their influences from everywhere."

Not really although they can get it from a lot of places although often you don't need influences.

"I don't see why the Pendolino designers wouldn't have looked at the fasted ever steam locomotive and thought, ah, they may be onto something there."

Because they're outdated, there was less nostalgia and there is aerodynamics and there was the TGV.

"I'm just looking at it. From a designer's perspective."

You're not. You're looking from a steam engine enthusiast's perspective.

"If I see something that bloody works and does it's job well, I take notice."

You don't have to. There is aerodynamics. Also this argument better supports the idea that the TGV was the influence than the LNER A4.

Just out of interest, where is this taken? I'm tempted to say Manchester Piccadilly...

Indeed, the streamlining is incredibly similar. Just goes to show how earlier streamlined locos influenced the design of some more modern rolling stock.
