I honestly can't help but feel nostalgic when I see this. I can just picture my grandma back in my country cooking for the whole family...

Very beautiful work, very nice brushwork.

It's called El Salvador. It's actually the smallest country in Central America.

alright, I mean I have heard of El salvador!
For the painting I had poorer parts of India and Burma and Laos in mind - that's why she looks a bit east-asian and wears a hat.

Something freaky about it. Pretty. Like the way you seem to use color. Grey and pink.

An interesting work. I can identify with this lady every day that I do the ever mundane task of dishes Does the hat indicate that she is perhaps oriental? I am unable to read the center part of the picture. There appears to be fire... is it in a pit in a wood block? Forgive me. I am not being factious. Would this also be steam or smoke. Either way, I think the picture perhaps would be enhanced by making this a little less strong so that it does not steal from the unusual but strong placement of the center of interest.

Thanks for finding it interesting.
Now, one by one, lol!
Yes, it is PRECISELY what I want to convey the sheer mundaneity of daily tasks.Glad I have come across ok for that.
And yes, she is chinese.
It is cooking on fire by burning wood. The task becomes that much harder. And, believe me, it is still a way of cooking per force for millions of poor Indians even now. That drudgery of having to spend hours to gather wood, dry it, then put the fire on, then cook....all that I wanted to depict.
The smoke and haziness, I agree are strong, to some extent meant to, as that smoke really burns your eyes.

Thank you very much again for a detailed comment.

as i told you some time ago, i really like this one. the kinda blurry atmosphere, the feeling of stopped time... the calmness of that person (an old woman?) it's like the whole painting slowly whispers and invites you to this quiet place, where is never "too late"...

I can't make out half of the picture because of that cumbersome smoke. (I wouldn't be happy, either.)

To think, this would've been a very common scenario 100 years ago, and some people are still living this way.

Regardless of the amount of convenient appliances someone has, the whole prospect of cooking could put such an expression on one's face. She doesn't seem miffed so much as indifferent. Perhaps she's the sole caretaker of a family, and this is one of a myriad of daily chores...

This is very easy to relate to, and not nearly as symbollic as some of your paintings. It's a nice breather, even if it is full of smoke.

lol, thanks for the 'clear' comment, smoke notwithstanding.

I agree it is an easy painting - and I meant to convey the unattractive part of a daliy chore. If that comes across, I am happy.

I like the look of concentration on the cook's face. The steam adds to the overall heat of this pic, even though it is a nuetral color. The background also looks like fire somewhat, giving this visual heaviness, and the feeling of important and heavy work...not necesarily drudgery...just an important part of the day.
One of my favorites of yours.

Comparatively speaking,
It looks like you spent much more time on this piece. You worked it well. And didnt stop too soon, or too late.
This is a beautiful piece, It is visually and artistically convincing, you pulled off a wonderful piece of realism here, as far as proportions, lighting, depth and composition, this is one of your better works.

Good work.

actually I didn't spend any more time than usual acrylic.wanted this to be in oil and I would not have been able to get the same effect in acrylic
just re-discovering oil, really.

Wonderful detail in this one. I love your color choices..and your people as always..great. Your steam seems a little opaque I think. Looks like sun may be coming in from the left to give direct illumination?.. maybe why the steam is heavy? Over-all great painting.

ckp In reply to artsyone39 [2004-10-28 05:31:00 +0000 UTC]

yes, I want to emphasise the irksome aspect of cooking, and I think in such wood/coal burning type of cooking, steam tends to be heavy, laden with carbon particles???

Thanks for liking the painting
