And I am surprised that I didn't add this as a favorite when I commented on it before.

This is a wonderful depiction of poverty in the land of wealth. We in the west have the luxury of being aware of our surroundings and, living on credit, we enjoy the fashion and faux-wealth of owning cars and recreational vehicles, all run on oil and gas. This painting brings the reality to light as to where it all comes from. Thankyou for this.

I love this painting and it reminds me quite a bit of people in my area. Native Americans (or as the illegal immigrant, Columbus mistakenly called them, Indians - am I mistaken in sensing that you are of Indian (from India) descent?) suffering from a poverty level unlike any other race or culture in the U.S.

They definitely know the difference between needs and wants. I loved the oil derrick in the background - it's almost as it's out of reach to the woman in the painting. I also liked your use of the word EMPATHY in answering one of the comments - it's too bad there isn't more empathy in this world. There is an old Indian saying about "walking a mile in my mocassins," and it refers exactly to stopping to think how I feel.

Very striking painting, and I assure you, I'll be thinking of it the rest of tonight!

yes, colonisatiion has always uprooted the indigenous cultures in the name of 'rogress'- when all it wants really is resources to feed the artificially created wants of ever-growing consumption.

And that couldn't be more true than in Western countries who've used technology to promote their imperialism throughout the world. We're doing it now in Iraq and people are dying just so that trendy, rich people can drive Hummers and gas-hog SUVs.

I'm sure a lot of people who listen to me would rather I didn't bring up Iraq or the inadequacies of the Bush administration. I still hammer away on them, however, as I feel that NO ONE should ever mistake a "good ole' boy" as the kind of guy you'd want running the country OR in charge of the military!

what is the object in the upper right corner?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ckp In reply to frizzyblue [2007-06-03 08:42:56 +0000 UTC]

it is supposed to be some sort of tower/oil rig/tall artificial construct - denoting 'wants'.Not sure if it has come out well but wanted to leave it ambiguous too at the same time!!

Good to hear from you after ages. Hope you have been alright. and thanks for looking it up.

How can you paint something so brutally honest if you have not lived it? I am astonished at how well you portray poverty in this painting.
You can almost feel the desperation of lost hope (not sure what else to call it) on her face.

that is what empathy is about, isn't it?
One doen't have to be poor/AIDS stricken/mentally ill.....to depict their plight [as some other of my work does].

thanks again for your appreciation, Gloria

People always look out for their own...rarely do they notice, or WANT to notice others!
Great work and focus!

one it will be necessary to replace the needs by the desire. It's such a luxury to be able to test desires

thanks for the fav, Helene

I don't quite get what you are saying.

Do you mean -

it is necessary to replace needs by desire because that would be more gratifying?

or

it is not necessary to replace needs by desire, as desire is a luxury??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

helenegrasset In reply to ckp [2007-03-31 10:26:37 +0000 UTC]

I mean that when all our needs are satisfied, we can allow to ourselves to test desires. Some people in this world can't allow this luxury because their elementary needs are not even satisfied( food, house, security ....)

I'm happy that you understood me! it was very easy in french... but in english... have a nice day. Some news about the exhibition?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ckp In reply to helenegrasset [2007-03-31 13:02:02 +0000 UTC]

About the exhibition - there is a Centre for Demenetia studies at Stirling University here. I had a preliminary meeting with the manager of the gallery there and also with the professor in charge of the Centre.

I had done a painting on Dementia
[link]

sometime back and they are interested in taking that painting.
With that as an entry-point I am trying for the gallery space there.

The manager e-mailed me yesterday saying that the Professor will be taking it up for decision during the next meeting of the trustees of the Centre.

So, we wait and hope that they agree to allocate us the space. I'll keep you informed.

Have a nice day, you too!
