Forlorn, hidden beneath veneer and
chandelier, black vest and white collar.
He takes to his prize basking in the sunlight
away from the working day, from
his friends, a moment alone in the crisp spring air.

Glaringly contrasting rose and mahogany
stands his plastic-tub prize, filled with
sweet pink, spoon swimming through his
escape from whatever may lie about:
against this vanity he lies in his
business suit and may indulge uncriticized.

For when he walks out that door, tomorrow
he knows that only he has the sweet escape
of his secret, only to be expressed in
circumlocution and exaggeration, to impress:
to live, in his daily life of wealth.

The sunlight will only come
of them all, to him.
