I am always reminded of something in 19th Century when I see especially your landscapes. ...such an ability to convey a sense of place...and such a splendid warmth and tranquility, that I can smell this tree.... sorry if I am repetitive....

...why the 19th cent though? I will ponder that...a certain certitude...?

All your comments, and esp. yours are important to me...I must admit that some landscapes are particulary inspiring to me - like this American tree. or "back from fishing"( that you never commented, I think), or the Sèvre with the duckweeds, or the seashore at Tromelin...I paint some others for I have been ordered. I took  a lot of pleasure adding

Reb's silhouette in front of the old seascape.... What did you do with  the other Reb's outline, before the trees of "trees long ago"? A "collage"! Something new for me...

I have been working on "Sid's landscape from the window". But right now,  I have not serenity enough, no quiet mind, to produce a good work... And I'm paralysed by the proximity of Christmas..What can you do to give me back some quietude? ( in french in the text) Could you send me a bit of your own serenity?

I dreamed of rivers rushing around buildings I knew in the Santa Cruz Mountains - a very vivid dream, which should've been scary - but - it was not - it was strangely reassuring... it produced a little serenity, but I will offer some other examples of serenity soon... I am very interested in what you are painting... I really liked that memorable little collage of Reb in the old trees... more...I will revisit Tromelin & the Duckweeds... it is clear that both have strong impressions associated ... both of us are impressionable of the sense of place ...sometimes from strange or very old places...or from common places...I have always been sensitive to sense-of-place....

There is a sense of "déjà vu" in some places i see for the first time...as if I had already come here in an earlier life -- the lines, the colors, the perfumes, the light

are in perfect harmony with my mood and mind..So, I feel "at home" when I go down to your Californian beach....or in your Santa Cruz woods.

Why would you "revisit" Duckweeds on the Sèvre? isn't this painting at hand,in your collection?

I verified: you never did any comment about "Back from fishing" - one of the first I submitted on DA.  I was satisfied enough with this work, for painting the sea at the foreground was difficult... Painting  SEA is fascinating, exciting; always a challenge. It's just like talking with a touchy friend....

I'm stupid and ridiculous to ask you to comment a work you have certainly already seen( my gallery is short enough)

I had yet promised to myself that I wouldn't beg for your comments anymore!

Boias alone has found some interest in this painting: it probably doesn't reserve more.

This picture shows a little treat for a landscape photographer.
With it's kind of growing and by showing it's roots the tree is a good example that it's not easy to withstand the force of nature.

if you get down to the comment of YouGee31 ( the orderer) you'll have the opportunity of watching the picture from which I've been inspired.
I  wasn't exactly carried away by this subject, but at last, I enjoyed a bit painting the hills and the clouds!

Ah yeah, thanks for the info. I checked it out. Now I've got a better imagination about the original. Unbelievable how it looks like - and your painting is like the original. YouGee31 can be proud to have it.
Well done!

I didn't try to paint like the original picture: I generally feel totatlly free with a landscape , to mean my emotion , my own vision, and try to communicate it to the watcher.  if not, a photo is sufficient and ...easier!
Its' so different with the portrait! I paint no more portraits: the connexion eye/hand
is no good enough. I suppose I'm too old....

Fabulous is strong perhaps... I enjoyed painting this scene, even though the grass at the foreground was particulary...boring. To be compared to Cezanne is a compliment I never got!

That is all thought-provoking.
Light - primarily light - is perhaps the essence of
visual art - and  it seems that every serious
artist and art critic has beautiful and
suggestive perspectives on light.
I am lucky enough to have a patrynomic
that means "light" in Hebrew ("aur")
and have been proccupied with light
ever since I first was exposed to art
especially when I first tried creating some art.
One of my favorite words is "ainsophaur"
(unending light)...
We might _only_ speak of light in art
from now on!!
...more to follow... enjoy your company!

...more to follow, but, in haste.....:

Thank you for what sounded like a compliment or two!

"aur" (אור)  is Hebrew for "light"

(my patronymic is "orr" (אור) - shortened from "orlovitz" and "orlov" ....
probably originally it was...."or".....
I hope that it bodes well for an artist.

"ainsophaur" is Hebrew for "unending light"

...however, I am one of the world's worst students
of Hebrew... I am sooooo slow.... I have forgotten all that
I knew a century ago... also Greek...I knew more
Greek than Hebrew at one point.... definitely buried now
in deep neural places.... I was briefly a good student of
French. I got good grades, and
my teacher said I had a good Parisian accent.
I will resume my French language studies....

I am ambivalent about geneology....
and... I have an interesting comment that one
cousin made that I will relate!

I sent my (your) packet 9 days ago .  Will you tell me when  you'll get it? I have been told: 5 or 6 days...A joke, I suppose...

I am not happy at all to hear that you are not well.
It does matter!  Please tell me whatever you can.

I will certainly tell you immediately on receipt of your packet!

I just returned the children home from nearly a week
in Coarsegold yesterday,
and, today, in Frisco, to a few Drs appointments with Jeanne...

Tomorrow, Friday, Jeanne and I will try to escape the July 4 holiday crowds
in the city, and drive to Coarsegold.... returning next Tuesday most likely.

Si tu as lu le comment de Artin2007 ( qui vit apparemment près de Yosemite Park) cet arbre est un Mesquite. C'est la profondeur de la perspective qui m'a séduite.L'herbe m'a donné du fil à retordre!

Thank you, John! Could you explain what is a " negative" or "positive" shape?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JohnPatience In reply to ClairObscur16 [2015-08-12 06:39:42 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome Michele.

The positive shapes are the solid shapes of the tree itself,
and the negative shapes are the shapes of the sky behind the tree.
I'm sure that there are many people who could explain this better and
that you probably understand it anyway. No doubt French artists talk
about positive and negative shapes but perhaps with different terminology.

My goodness, this is quite beautiful.  As I may have mentioned,
I do admire your landscapes. It is _very_ much like
the local flora where I am a lot of the time: Coarsegold near Yosemite.
It is a Mesquite tree.....

ClairObscur16 In reply to artin2007 [2015-08-11 17:03:02 +0000 UTC]

Is this tree growing near your place? Near Yosemite Park? This painting has been "ordered", but I had a great pleasure painting the "shadowed hill", as says Matamage. We haven't such deep landscapes in France! ( and anywhere in Europ). Thank you Sidney.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

artin2007 In reply to ClairObscur16 [2015-08-11 17:49:07 +0000 UTC]

Yes, there are uncounted Mesquite trees
here in the dryer foothills next to Yosemite.
There are almost none where it is higher
elevation, esp. Yosemite.
The "shadowed hill", with grass and trees,
and here, Granite boulders, is a good place to
cast an photographer/artist's eye.
It is very un-urban, and not sub-urban, either,
in the least. Just earth decorated with a little flora.
