Description Deviation titles are waaaay too short ;^; And I *will* resist urges to spam more of this costume Dx

As soon as I saw Lal, I think my first thought was 'ZOMGMUSTCOSPLAY'. She's so awesome and cool and kickass after having been through so much - she just keeps on trucking.

In some ways, she was really different from alot of the other characters that I've made (wtfshortshorts?!) as most of the detail in her was in really miniscule things that I didn't even pick up on at first glance.

Cloak: First time making any sort of cloak, which is kinda surprising as I've *always* wanted an epic cloak...I think I might've gotten that. Drafted 2-3 times out of calico before realising that what was going to make it keep it's form is the collar which I re-inforced with chickenwire and interfacing and held closed with a clasp and magnet. The flame pattern had to be drawn on to the pieces after they were traced out. The flames were then all cut out, had bits of Vliesofix applied to them, had over hanging bits of Vliesofix trimmed off, Vliesofix backing removed, lined up the flame/Vliesofix'd material with the made body of the cloak, before very carefully ironing it all into place to avoid any wrinkling ...all of which probably makes no sense xD But the first tier took about 9 hours, and being something stupid like a 1 1/2 circle cloak, the second tier took even longer - I lost track x_x Fun fact! The bottom of the cloak is over 10m long

(Gorilla) Shoulder guard: Essentially sculped from balsa wood - having good (scaled) reference pictures has never been so useful! We (my father and I) started by making a shape that fitted over my shoulder, which was then built up with extra pieces of balsa which were then cut and sanded down to match ref pics. Painted with a combination of spray and acrylic paints.

Wig: Cut by my lovely ~nek and ink dyed + styled by me.

Goggles: After going through 5 drafts and 4 mockups, I still haven't managed to create something that I'm satisfied with which is why they aren't here, but they shall be done for future shoots! *victory pose*

Tank top: Not too difficult to make + work the stitch lines into, but nowhere in Melbourne stocks plum cotton lycra! So the material spent a grand total of 10.5 hours/630 minutes in 7 various dye baths made up of 4 different dyes, which was done over 2 weeks. I finally got a colour that I was happy with, and I definitely feel alot more confident with dying fabrics now =3

Short shorts: First time wearing/making/parading around in short shorts...EVAR. And I'm pretty sure there's some precise art out there to making them. Hemmed using Vliesofix to avoid stitch lines.

Box weapons: Close up can be seen at [link] Made out of card reinforced with foamcore and decorated with foam, they were alot of fun to make. The designs on the faces were yoinked from anime stills, and the opening is actually open xD Unfortunately, I forgot to work the teeth into the cornice design which resulted in cutting out, painting and sticking down 240 of them. Despite being incredibly fiddly, I think I do like it more this way.

Shooter: The main body was scaled to my forearm and sculpted out of left over balsa with the hand attatchment being made out of foam. The tubing is a combination of corrugated conduite and sponge rubber as it was the only stuff that would bend and hold such an acute angle.

Rings: Despite originally wanting to commission Lal's rings, under time + funding restaints, I bowed in and bought some of the official merch with intentions to cast them. However, upon receiving them I was really impressed and realised there was no way I was going to be able to make something better. However, her pinky ring still had to be made, and all rings needed Mammon chains wrapped around them x_x

Shoes: Was really lucky and found something with the heel + sole that I needed which were cleaned + painted to the right colour, and then covered.

Pacifier: Made on a whim for procrastination, I'm so glad I did. It really bought alot to my insight of her character. And tracing her corrupted symbol onto it wasn't as difficult as I thought it'd be.

Centipede: Not seen here, LEGOLESS the centipede was used in my skit and is about 1 1/2 metres long and fully articulated and collapsible.

TL;DR again! OTL

Won First Place in the Melbourne Preliminary Round of the Madman National Cosplay Competition.

Oh God I ADORE your cosplay. You put so much effort into it... It's perfect!

Thank-you so much! Lal's my favourite character in KHR, so getting all of her details right was really important to me.

You're welcome, you really did an outstanding job!
...Also, may I have a little request? May you give me your MSN/Skype so I could ask you for tips when making my own cosplay?
Because I had the idea of cosplaying Lal in mind from quite long, yet... it's my first cosplay and I don't know much about it, plus I don't want any flaws in it (or at least as little as possible)...

Thanks again! I'd really love to help out, though I'm not sure how much assistance I could be because I'm pretty bad with explaining things, and I did make Lal about 3 years ago now. But my e-mail's on my main page if you want to send any questions through to it - I check it a lot more often that notes on devART.

can i ask you in a bit more detail (or step by step) how you mad the cloak i wanna do a lal mirch cosplay but i have no idea where to begin with making the cloak especially with the flame patter. (i was planning on sewing a sort of tan colored square or rectangular blanket but i don't know where to begin with putting the flames on or if that will even work)

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

ClamWings In reply to jessi-who [2011-07-23 07:21:34 +0000 UTC]

I've already put pretty much all of the details of my cloak in my description. The best help I can give us to apply the flames using Vliesofix or Heat 'n' Bond, which is like an iron-on adhesive to bond two fabrics together - and it'll also seal the edge of the fabric so you don't have worry about hemming it! =3

ok so can vliesofix be found at a local fabric or craft store

It should be able to! If you have any problems, just ask the staff. It should be with the patchworking things.

This. Is. Epic. OMG...
You're so epic-ly professional at this cosplaying stuff. I only wish I were like you TTATT
This is so amazing! I'm cosplaying as her for the AnimeNext in 2 months and I'm just modifying her clothing.
Where did you get the rings/How much did they cost? X3

Aaw, thank-you so much! I know this reply's a bit late, but good-luck with your own Lal! I really wanted to get my rings comissioned, but I ended up just buying the official rings off of eBay~ XD

KitomiYamano [2011-01-06 08:51:44 +0000 UTC]

If you made the things like the shoulder guard, arm guard, and boxes you'd make some awesome cash because your things look epicly amazing and pretty much full on accurate. Yea....cause i want to cosplay Lal but i'm scared to make those things TT.TT

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

ClamWings In reply to KitomiYamano [2011-07-23 07:25:00 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot! I think the shoulder and arm guard were a bit more trouble than they were worth, and I don't think people would want to pay for that...plus I'm not that confident in my skills, but still, thank-you! I think it's all a matter of trial and error - I'm sure you'll get there!

flamesofart-bs [2010-09-09 14:01:50 +0000 UTC]

WOW *___* you're the best Lal Mirch i've seen so far รงVรง

I have a question: the wig was cut and ink dyed, but the base wig was...? Where did you buy it? :3
And what ink dye did you use? *V*

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

ClamWings In reply to flamesofart-bs [2011-07-23 07:26:23 +0000 UTC]

The base wig was just a plain white wig, from memory. When dying wigs, it's always best to start with white (or light silver/blonde if white's not availabe), just so the colour you're applying is what you'll end up with. And I always use FW acrylic inks

This is a really good cosplay, though. Especially since it's (almost) all handmade :3

I love your cosplay with a passion xD and you gave me so much motivation to do my own Lal <3

How did you make your belt? o.o

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

ClamWings In reply to XXwhisperofthewind [2010-06-14 14:02:39 +0000 UTC]

I'm really glad you're able to get that motivation from my costume! Makes me very happy =3 The world needs more Lal cosplayers~

The belt was actually one of the simplest parts - it's just a long rectangle of grey vinyl, but the join is on an angle (unlike a normal belt) and covered by the boxes so it's not that obvious.

I love this cosplay so much! I'm glad I have an idol to look up to for my Lal Mirch cosplay I will debut this Friday XD

My only question, if I can ask, is how does the gorilla pad stay on your shoulder? owoll

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

ClamWings In reply to lexy-chan [2010-01-08 11:57:55 +0000 UTC]

Thank-you so much! That's so lovely to hear, good-luck!

I hope it's not too late now...but good old velcro! Since the my gorilla was sculpted out of balsa wood, it's really light weight. you'll need to use adhesive-backed velcro to put on the gorilla, but that stuff can get a bit funny and won't always stick on material. So it's best to use sew on velcro for that, or put some stitches through the adhesive to make sure it stays on. =3

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

lexy-chan In reply to ClamWings [2010-01-31 20:05:09 +0000 UTC]

Velcro!? Really!? OAO It looks so sturdy! That's awesome! My gorilla is made out of cardboard and plaster of paris, so it's fairly lightweight. I'll definitely try that though! Thanks again! <3 <3

Thank you so much for the detailed information on how you made your cosplay! It really helped me get a sense of what I could do with my own Lal cosplay, and I hope it will turn out well (although probably not as successful as yours x3)

Congrats on the win by the way!
