Actually no. The Big Boy was a 4-8-8-4. This is it's smaller (yes!) cousin... a 4-6-6-4. Kinda makes you realize how big a Big Boy must have been.

It was coasting quite comfortably... not wasting any steam. usually if you see smoke pouring out it is intentionally done for show. It usually means there is too much draft across the fire and the fuel is burning inefficiently.

Rumor has it, through an official UP employee from Omaha, that this bad boy will be out running again with the 844 sometime this summer, between Denver, Omaha, KC, and North Platte.

actually Don... no... these were very smooth running engines with well balanced drivers... the only thing odd was the double exhaust...chuf-chuff.. chuf-chuff

I'll never forget the time SP4449 was doing a slow move down the yard, about 6 feet in front of me.
If I closed my eyes, the hissing of steam was the only clue I would've had it was there. It was a perfectly made machine.
That was back at Sacramento Railfair '91.
