Description I know I've been repeating locomotive types but browsing through the slide boxes... this photo just made me think of the last few days. Baking hot, incredibly bright, a small white cloud rapidly evaporating in an unrealistically blue sky. and classic colors chalking and fading. This SW7 was shot one August 1970 day on the dry plains of Wyoming. I remember thinking about how hot the plastic seats of my car were going to be when I got back in it.

Very nice shot. Bonus with the MOW train on the next track. Looks like a derrick train by the tank car in the lineup.

Thanks for sharing.

That's an SW9--no louvers above the road name. That looks like a turbine tender behind it!

Quite correct. However just for grins the UP rebuilt this unit to SW10 later.

THOSE are neat little locos. Like a GP7 mashed into the long hood

Is that a Vanderbilt tender on the track next to the SW7? I see some sort of former passenger car being used for MOW, so I'd imagine that the Vandy tender was being used for water...

Yup... that's an MOW string. Every railroad I ever looked at in any detail always used 2nd or 3rd hand equipment for it's MOW crew. At least it was painted a heat reflective color!

I took a similar shot like this ages ago.
