You know, the more I think about it, had UP/EMD made the DD40AX with a middle truck assembly and made the whole thing articulated, it might have been slightly longer-lasting than this design. It's just so long, that the frame had to suffer a lot in the middle from stress fractures and metal fatigue.

yeah but that's pretty much the same as having B-units ... which the UP fooled around with for years

True, but my guess is that the frames, no matter how stiff, were still overstressed because of the length and amount of weight.
I figure they'd at least put another B-truck in the middle for that. But maybe the engineers were better at making a cantilever frame than I thought.

What kind of hike is that? Is it pretty strenuous? Where is the trailhead?
