It makes the 5.56x54mm look even more puny and gurly (said in Arnold Schwarzenegger voice)

lol - it IS puny - but surprisingly effective apparently...

That vulcan round sure is scary, no wonder it destroys tanks so easily.

Indeed - you *might* expect an armoured vehicle to survive one or two hits, but 50 or 60 in 1/2 a second? not a hope...

I have one one my windowsill here at home, along with a Bushmaster round (which is nearly identical) and it dwarfs pretty much everything standing nearby...

Wow, how did you manage to get one?

Claveworks In reply to EAMR262 [2011-05-02 17:15:23 +0000 UTC]

I was visiting a tank museum in Norfolk... I should say 'Norfolk, England' actually.... and they had a fair selection of bullets/shells for sale. The projectile part of course is a machined aluminium replica (no high explosives for sale here lol) but the cartridge is original (dark brown) and so is the Bushmaster cartridge which is brass. I also got a 30mm Aden (blue practice) and a 20mm also blue practice shell.

There are not many places selling the larger stuff - I mean 0.50 cal and 7.62 is common everywhere, but above 20mm is hard to find...

I will give the place a plug, because it is pretty good: [link]

Awesome, over here you need to have a friend or a family member in the armed forces just to get a 5.56 round...

See people? When you get shot with BMG rounds, you can still say "could be worse". Provided you're still alive.

Holy Shite those things are large.

Hmm, I think I have almost 3/4 of those (shells only) in my collection. Don't have a 25 or a 14.5.
Nice work!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Claveworks In reply to R0tti [2011-03-12 22:57:48 +0000 UTC]

14.5 and 25mm are hard to find

I have .303, 7.62 small and large, .30 Winchester, 0.50 BMG, 20mm as in pic, 30mm Aden, 30mm GAU-8, and 30mm Bushmaster (which is pretty much the same, but brass case) I am not a collector though, I just got them for research...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

R0tti In reply to Claveworks [2011-03-13 05:05:12 +0000 UTC]

Nice - never had a .303.
I'm more of a "user" than a "collector", but I'll collect it if I can have it!

Used a .30-.30 Winchester for my first deer, a .338 Win Mag for my first moose.
Got a 40mm dummy (training round for M203). Cases for 20mm and 30mm.
Live rounds: .50 BMG, 7.62x39, .223 and 5.56x45 (slight difference but my Bushy runs on either), .308, .30-.06, .30-.30, .338 short, .338 Win Mag, 12 ga. of all kinds (slugs, buckshot, birdshot - bird hunting and bear or home defense), .45 ACP, 10mm, .40 S&W (killed my first bear with .40 S&W in self defense), .44 magnum, .41 magnum, .357 magnum (but no gun to go with that old ammo ), .38 spcl., 9mm (again - upgraded to .40, no more 9mm rock chucker), .25 ACP (bought a Gentleman's Automatic at an auction) and .380/ 9mm Kurz (WWII war trophy - got a .380 Beretta with WWII markings), and of course, .22 LR.

Got to shoot the 5.7 rounds in a Class III P90 (surpressed! What fun!) but couldn't keep any rounds because they were armor piercing "pistol" rounds. Think I have a few empties, though - just the bullet is classified were I live.

The ones I enjoy the most are the simple ones... The ones I rely on for serious work aren't so much fun to shoot.

Ah yes, we have gun laws here, so the only live ammo I have fired was 7.62 - from an FN SLR and LMG when I was in the RAF... a lifetime ago now lol

Still, I have nothing to complain about. Two good legs, two good arms (with hands!!!), two good eyes (with corrective lenses), etc., etc.
Every day I can do a task for myself is a day of pure bliss!

Life and good health are the most precious of gifts.

My father suffered a stroke on his 68th birthday. He spent two and a half years paralyzed on the left side before he died. He only got to sip a few small drinks of coke or water (he loved coke) in that time. Most of his eating was done via a feeding tube in his stomach. And he couldn't do those little things like bath or use the bathroom - things we take for granted.

My younger brother is unable to walk due to extreme gout and possibly something else - we don't know yet.

My twin brother was unable to walk or sit or use the bathroom in a normal fashion for two years because of a cyst.

So when my joints hurt or I'm a little winded from a cold day walking my dogs and my glasses fog up or mosquitoes are pestering me... I enjoy it for all it's worth.

And when I see young guys return from battle missing eyes, limbs or worse, with brain damage, I know that I owe them.

at what size do they start exploding when they hit the wall??

Claveworks In reply to vombatusv8 [2011-03-12 22:52:18 +0000 UTC]

20mm and up I think - there *might* be explosive cores in the smaller ones, but I have not heard about them...

hehe I remember when I got my live 14.5mm round delivered I was like, "Hmmm just looks like a .50 cal round..." then I looked over at the .50 cal round I have and said, "Holy crap! That's puny!" XD

Ah yes, the cartridge has a lot more bulk than the 0.5 inch - it's actually closer to the 20mm...

TopGunSGA [2011-03-05 22:51:21 +0000 UTC]

Didn't realise there that much of a difference between the 0.303 and the 20mm

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Claveworks In reply to TopGunSGA [2011-03-12 15:53:03 +0000 UTC]

Yep - it's about 1/3 of the size - and that makes a massive difference to the weight of the projectile: 9 grams for one vs 120 grams for the other...
