Description The Douglas C-47 Skytrain or Dakota was adapted from the DC-3 airliner as a military transport aircraft in WW2 and has been used by almost every air force in the world since then.

The Dakota was introduced in 1941 and widely used by Allied forces in every theatre of the war, with over 10,000 being produced.

The Dakota has a crew of four and can carry up to 28 troops or 6,000 lb payload.  It was used for troop transport, parachute drops, surveillance, and general transport.

This example is a Dakota of 267 Squadron Royal Air Force 1942.

Such a versatile aircraft it truly is no surprised that it has lasted as long as it has.

It was kind of genius - I don't think anyone before this had invented a 'universal truck of the sky' - and there was not much else like it around for years, except maybe the IL-14, until they designed the C-130 which was more 'monster truck of the sky' lol.

Agree on every point. The fact that so many are still flying today is a testament to their versatility and ruggedness.
At the same time they have a beauty and grace about themselves too. Long may they continue to take to the skies.
