I love the atmosphere of this piece, kind of a mysterious eerie kind. But I can see seveal little mistakes on it.
First being the most prominant, you horse is way over smudged, giving it a play dough effect. Try usign a smaller brush to advoid cancelling out all the details in the picture. If its a poor quality photo, take a new layer and highlight the lighter ares in white, the darker area's in black and set that layer to soft light.
Second is your lighting is all counfused. Your horses light source is from the left while your background is from the back and is having a harsh impact on the water even though its a cloudy day? So yeah the shadow looks out of place campared to the horse.
Next would be your hoof prints. I must congratulate you on the skill in which you have to place the foot in the sand so well but the other hoof prinits arent up to the same standard. For one they're coming from the left, directly from the side of the picture, where as the horse has been coming from an angle, even if it had turned at that point the horse wouldnt have been able to get in its current position so quickly, and you have a hoof print under the foot that hasnt even been placed yet? o_O maybe a forgetfull mistake? o.o
Lastly I must comment on the strange green hair in the horses mane and tail o.O it just simply looks odd and out of place to me.

if you don't mind me asking, i was just wondering what technique you use to paint the hair? i use a 1px hard brush to do every strand, but somehow it doesn't seem right...

I actually learned how to paint manes & tails by following various tutorials here on dA, and practicing over and over. I have a video tutorial up on youtube of a mane speedpaint here. I'll have a more detailed tutorial up eventually. xD
