I'm ashamed when I see your work, I hope one day I'll be able to do portraits as you do, it's really impressive.

I did a lot of portraits with pastel. But at the moment I paint a lot in oils. I like this portrait.

I came across your pastel and Sweet Lord it's pure beautiful.
New to DA and a bit of a 'born again painter' having only attempted to paint each decade while I worked on my Graphic design 'career'.
It's the early hours in little Ireland so I'm off to bed but as Arnold S said 'I'll be back'.

this is really beautiful. I love your use of pastels. What pastels do you use?

Two kinds, Rembrandt Soft pastels and NuPastel hard pastels. The hard pastels don't fill up as much tooth on the paper so I use them to sketch out the image and almost everything else is done in Rembrandts which have a great buttery feeling (relatively speaking). I don't bother with cheaper "academic" pastels as they have much more filler and less pigment and aren't as buttery. Senelier is also a great brand but a bit more expense. They have some dark warm colors that are really good, which is the only weakness in the Rembrandt line. I use the large three-trayed wooden case from Rembrandt and can sometimes be found on eBay for a great price.

thanks. I have some Winsor & Newton soft pastels and then some faber castell and derwent pastel pencils.
I might have to get some Rembrandts.
