Description I've been wanting to do some oil painting recently but haven't had the means so I decided to go for it with Photoshop on my Mac. I approached it much the same way I would a traditional painting; I toned the canvas with a warm neutral tone, did a quick burnt sienna block-in then started to refine the drawing. I then switched to more of a pastel (or egg tempera) technique where you pick out pure colors and build them transparently one over the other until you reach the right tone. What's wonderful about this is that you can see the wonderful colors underneath which make it glow.
I always intended for this to be just a head and shoulders study so I gradually lessened the detail moving down from the face. At the end I added some paint smears and spots to balance out the piece and give it more of a classical painting look.

Many thanks to the model [link] Lockstock and her Princess stock image

The main bristly one used on the skin was a custom one I made and the softer block-in lines seen on the body section was a new brush I got off a CD collection.

as a oil painter for 35 years you hit it perfect with this piece. I try to approach my work the same way. as I would an oil painting

Nice work my friend

Thanks for the insight into your painting process. It's a beautiful piece! In fact, all of your digital work has a wonderful "painterly" look. I had to double-check to make sure this wasn't an actual oil or tempera piece.

Lovely! The power of a strong yellow is so often overlooked when it comes to a figure painting. You used your colors so well here, it makes everything very vivid.

I've kinda made myself avoid fancy brushes these days in PS so I can focus on my rendering and blocking of values, but when I feel like playing around with some new textures again I'll have to give this method a try.

Did you make your own brushes in Photoshop?

ClintCearley In reply to xXBlackMagicXx [2008-02-22 19:25:54 +0000 UTC]

I did for the main bristly one used on the skin and the grungy one used along the edges. For the softer block-in lines seen on the body section I tried out a new brush I got off a CD collection.

Oh man...I love this! And you're right about that technique...some great colors really show through and make it really pop out and just..wow. I really want to try this technique some time.
