Description The soft overcast enabled me to get the cat without the usual hard contrast that hides the whites on the fur. Unusual is the fact that claws and tail are visible in a walking posture which captures the entire cat in motion. Shot at high ISO and shutter speed, there is plenty of detail to study and absorb how the cheetah walks. It was Winter light, sacred in it's gentleness. Taken at the Kansas City Zoo, Kansas City, Missouri, USA, 1/7/2012. Note that cheetahs do not have retracting claws. They are the most ancient of the large cats. This particular cat broke into a run immediately after the photo was taken.

The reason why the cheetahs claws are visible is because cheetahs have semi retractable claws. It helps them like cleats help football players.

By the way this is a great capture!

Thanks, Billy. I am slowly developing a theory on cheetah art that I hope to use to place these photos in a public space--no small feat in a recession, when few care about art enough to part with money for it. Didn't our taxes go to bail out banks so they could free money up, and then they held on to it? Or am I sounding logical, rather than artistic?

Sadly, there isn't a lot of love out there for the artistically-inclined.

As black and white subjects, Mel, they just flip me out. I'm taking a big gamble here in KC, investing in paper, ink, and frames (not cheap, as they are big for large walls in office buildings) in the hopes that I can get a corporate sponsor that will hang them through the local arts council, and even go so far as to BUY THEM. Like I told Teresa, I'm probably whacked out a bit on the idea, but I love the cats. Converting each file involves many precise touches, and the cheetahs as subjects respond like a landscape would.
